Some people like to celebrate how hard the game is, I don't find
Dark Souls 2 too hard, but having your character become a hideous green zombie and lose max health if you so much as dare die once is annoying. I would rather just have to restart from a last saved location than be penalized for something that naturally happens in practically every game.
Souls games really aren't
that hard unless you're new to them and don't know how the game works, or have enemy movements memorized. Even then, they're not hard if you just take your time and progress through areas carefully, which is what I tend to do in most games.
Losing your humanity in DS2 is definitely more annoying than in the other games, thanks to the loss of HP. Farming Human Effigies so that you don't have to stay Hollow definitely helps, although I forget the best methods for farming them. There are also a few rings that can help mitigate the effects of dying, if you can get a hold of those.
IMO I still think of Dark Souls II as my favourite of the series, although for whatever reason nowadays, I just never play it very long. I think I'm just so burnt out from playing all the games for years that I haven't had much motivation to replay them much lately.
