I'm probably going to jump straight into it after I finish Tomb Raider, so get ready to see me bitch about a game's platforming controls even more than I do now.

I've been meaning to play an AC at some point, considering I never have. Maybe I'll jump on this.

EDIT:

Wait, only on UPlay? It's still $20 on Steam. Wth?

Because Ubisoft owns Uplay.

You still have to use UPlay if you get it on Steam though

Yes, that is correct.

They're trying to compete with Steam.

If they're trying to compete with Steam, why do they add all of their games to Steam?

To try and get users fed up with the process of Steam and just go to their own store instead.

IIRC, Epic Games did a bit of this before they became their own independent store, which a decent chunk of the hate for the Epic Store came from.

Speaking of new games, Receiver 2 came out yesterday. It's got the same basic gameplay as the original, but with more and improved stuff. You explore a randomly generated environment searching for cassette tapes. There are hostile turrets and flying taser drones that you can either avoid or take out with your handgun.

The gun handling is the big selling point, Receiver 2 allegedly models every moving part in the guns, and operating them is a multi-step process. Just like in Receiver, you can't just press the reload button to reload. You need to properly open up the gun, eject the empty cartridges from a revolver, manually load rounds into the magazine of a semi-auto, then put it all back in the proper condition to fire. To this, Receiver 2 has added misfires and malfunctions. Your gun can jam and need to be cleared before it can fire again, and if you holster or draw too fast while it's in an unsafe condition you can shoot yourself in the leg.

Another new feature I'll describe in a spoiler, because it's pretty shocking when it happens the first time, big holy shit moment, and I'll just note that the game's warning about themes of mental health and self-harm is warranted.
In the fiction of the game, the vague enemy force referred to only as The Threat is dreaming those turrets into existence to attack you. It/They/???? can also dream trap cassette tapes into existence. These come in the form of recorded suicide notes, and as you listen to them you'll get a warning that the voice of The Threat is taking control, and your character, "you", will start to turn your gun on yourself. If you don't very quickly unload it, you'll be psychically forced to shoot yourself. If you unload it fast enough, or if you unloaded it before hand to be safe, and then you'll get a Threat Recovery tape describing how the person whose suicide note you were listening to also survived, sought help, and recovered.

They've added a rank system, which is my biggest complaint about the game. In Receiver the aim was to find 11 tapes, then you win, if you die, start over. In 2 your goal is to find and listen to 5 tapes, and when you do you'll go up a rank and get dropped into a new randomly generated map with more and more dangerous enemies, find five more tapes to rank up again, through 5 ranks. If you die you go down a rank. The bullshit part is that if you quit the game you go down a rank as well. I've only managed to get to rank 2, so I don't know you can come back to the game at, say, rank three if you were rank four when you quit. Fair enough if you lose the progress of the run you're currently on when you quit, that's standard for games where that's a thing, but ranking down seems excessive.

That aside, it's a fun game. Pretty much a straight improvement of the original.

It's hard to think that the original came out in 2013... Feels like ages ago. I remember watching NerdCubed play it when I was a lad. The new one sounds cool, like the misfires and shit, sounds entertaining and frustrating at the same time. One of my favorite things in Far Cry 2, as weird as it sounds, was having your gun jam in the middle of a firefight and diving for cover to fix it before you get blown to bits. It made it feel really gritty and visceral to me.

China to ban online gaming, chatting with foreigners outside Great Firewall

No more playing with Chinese players.

They're also banning "organizing unions" within Chinese games, which is going to absolutely destroy the MMO market.

There's also now a "gaming curfew" (Chinese people under the age of 18 aren't allowed to game between 10pm and 8am), and a law setting the max amount of money a person can spend on video games.

I mean, it could be. China's standing military is about 2 million, with an extra 500K sitting reserve. Revolution is a numbers game. When a populace that big wants to stop putting up with shit, it just takes someone to get them all riled up and resisty. You can't stop them all.

They control the flow of information. Firewalls, Censorship, and Surveillance are all ways that china uses to prevent a large gathering to attempt a revolution. Also theres no telling your recruiting a loyalist, when your attempting to form a revolutionary group. Its not cookie cutter easy.

It can't be that hard. Not like North Korea where the entire populace is functionally brainwashed. All it takes it one disgruntled guy to stoke the fire a little and boom, viva la revolution and such.

China's government and system isn't even comparable to North Korea. The Chinese government controls every aspect of every Chinese person's life. They monitor and track every action taken by their populace, and score them on a scale they call "Social Credit." If your Social Credit drops, you lose your job, can't buy a house or get approved for a lease or a bank account. If it drops too low, the secret place take you in the night and put you in labor camps for the rest of your life. And usually your entire family too.

All digital communication is heavily monitored. There is no privacy in China. You will get stopped on the street if you have a low social credit score and the police will force you to install surveillance apps on your phone. If you say no, you disappear. But they'll take you in the street, just so everybody knows why you're gone.

You can't compare the Russian Empire to China. You can't compare anything to China.

Take it down a notch there, Orwell. You make them sound like the Cardassian from DS9. It's just a government. And no government is invincible. All they gotta do is realize that and presto, down goes all that communism.

Anyway, in news not related to deposing dictatorships, those Microsoft fucks have finally relented and say they're gonna refund my 15 bucks...in about 3 days.

All it took was me finally cursing at them and they fixed their mistake right quick. Suck on that, politeness.

You really underestimate the Chinese governments capability to control shit.

Was playing Mordhau earlier, and this guy in the chat ( a new player) was getting quite flustered and angry over how he was performing, giving off about x not being balanced, y being broken, why cant he be that good etc. And a few people were egging him on with the traditional "git gud you suck" mantra

I, in complete sincerity, said maybe he should take a break and do something to clear his head if the game is making him angry or annoyed. Because its not healthy and its good to take a break every now and then.

Boy he did not like that lol and he had a go at me, and then several others as well who tried to offer advice, and it just became this vicious circle of insults, snarky comments and loling from me over the course of about 4 matches till i got disconnected.

Good fun.

Yeah, years of playing LoL have taught me that telling a rager to relax has the opposite effect.

Now I exploit it when I'm winning to throw them off their game.
