Okay so a recap of my first VicII game:
First of all I want to say that I like it. Very cool game, very interesting, very fun. I started off as the USA by recommendation and I have to say it's an excellent starting point because the sheer potential you have is totally insane. I don't know how, but I completely avoided the Civil War despite hammering down hard against the Pro-Slavery crowd and even outright outlawing slavery. Maybe I just got lucky? Who knows, really. Tbh I barely had any idea of what I was doing so I just kinda winged it and didn't do that bad either. I saved Texas and expanded all the way to Cascadia. I industrialized fairly quickly and never had to deal with any serious threat at all. Allied with Central America (who lost El Salvador to nationalist rebels) and kept Liberia as my little puppet state. Got on Britain's good side though I did end up having to abandon my attempts to colonize British Columbia. I won 2-3 tug-of-war matches trying to colonize the unoccupied territories between me and Mexico. I built up a fairly large army and then prepared to Manifest Destiny myself across Mexico's northern territories, but fucking Britain had to intervene on their behalf because I was beating their numerically superior army's ass.
Honestly Britain just seems overpowered because it seems like they were involved in fucking everything that went on in the world. I ended up quitting the game because of their interference, which just pissed me off because now it was my numerically superior army getting stomped in my own territory. Before I quit I noticed they had like 199 influence over Mexico, which is probably why they got involved but I have honest to god no idea how they got it so high so quickly. Last I checked it was like 30 or something? Total bullshit; mind your own business, you stuck-up islanders.
Oh, and the Democratic party never lost an election. Somehow. I'm assuming it's because I was being rather populist. Anyway, I've learned some things from this experience:
1. Forts are totally useless
2. Fuck Britain
3. Always check the relations tab before you declare war
4. Always make sure you're militarily stronger than all your neighbors combined at the first opportunity
