The Imperial Reach wrote:Why refund the game when you all know Paradox will improve it later anyway? That just means you'll have to purchase & download it all over again. At least if it's collecting dust in your library you can just install the update/DLC and hop right back into it without putting in your card info and waiting 3-5 hours for it to download again.

Price might've come down a bit by then, and you can grab it in a sale. Plus another opportunity to try it and refund if it's still no good.

Talking of things we might buy in sales, what are the essential DLC to grab with HoI IV?

Are they all country specific, then? No EU4, Common Sense style DLC that include essential mechanics?

Also, which countries are good for learning the ropes?

They tend to focus on certain areas. One on China, one on the Balkan area, one does a lot for the Commonwealth, while another focuses on the Navy quite heavily, so you'll get the most out of it if you play naval focused nations.
I don't think there's anything essential like Common Sense, but I could be wrong. Hard to remember what comes in each one.

Honestly, Germany is probably the best starter imo. It's so easy for them to get so strong.

That said, Waking the Tiger is probably good if you're starting as Germany, cause it adds some new Focus Tree stuff to them allowing you to kick Hitler out.

They all add features that should have been in the free update. Death Or Dishonor and Wanking The Tiger Tank (Waking The Tiger) are the good ones (i haven't bought Man The Should Have Been A Freebie).

However they all add very important features so just swallow your pills and buy them all.

I'm having a lot more fun than I expected with I:R. I think a lot of people out there deluded themselves into thinking the game was going to be more than what was shared in the Dev Diaries. I'm enjoying the game as it is, regardless of my own opinions of how it could be better.

This is Sparta. I'm very pleased with my expansion but now I'm stuck in diplomatic hell because there have been NO implosions among the Diadochi whatsoever. Like, there's literally no military option left anywhere in the world, I'm just going to have to sit for a while and try to figure out how to sow dissent among the Diadochi.

Also, I have camels.

They're on par with me standing army-wise, but they're stupidly rich. Also, I'm getting my camels from them and much, much more, they've been wondrous trade partners all game.

You can do assassinations in I:R! I just haven't done it yet and I'm a little nervous about the consequences of trying are . . . it's surely what I'm going to be doing all of next session, until I force an implosion.

Both of my Sparta games have resulted in Macedon invading and annexing me, how did you manage to survive long enough to expand?

Also, how the fuck does one acquire a dock to build a navy, Crete requires a navy.

Only certain cities have ports, indicated by the lighthouse on the coast. You can’t build more where there aren’t any iirc.

Looking at a pic of it on Google, I think just Kydonia, Knossos, and Ierapetra have ports on Crete.

Yep, I ended up doing some uh... restructuring on the island to acquire two of them. Working towards the third and final one now. A small navy of six ships has been built. Truly Crete lives in enlightened times.

No, but the reason you should be excited is that the game allows some heavy character customization, one of those being pronouns.

I'll be honest. I:R was better than I expected. I've been trying to unite the Baltic and Pomeranian lands under my banner for the last 35 years. Half of the cities around me have become colonizable due to wars around me, while I have remained the Island of Stability amidst them all (thanks to bribes, of course).

Early on, don't ally ANYONE. That includes defensive pacts. Your chances of dying just go up by giving Makedon more opportunities like that. You want to consume every minor near you anyway, pacts of all sorts just get in the way of that. I also did my best to keep Makedon happy with me. I improved relations a few times and even gave them a gift when I felt like I had the spare money. Don't know if/how relevant relations were to keeping them off of me when I was weak, but it was a thing that probably helped.

Was doing well as Cantia, conquered about half the British Isles before a civil war broke out.

They'll be patching civil wars soon I hope, because currently the capital needs to be sieged down, but occupied territory instantly flips... so then the rebels get a new capital, which needs to be sieged down, and so on and so on.

There is an out of control trolley speeding towards Jeremy Bentham, who is tied to the track. You can pull the lever to cause the trolley to switch tracks, but on the other track is Immanuel Kant. Bentham is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Critique of Pure Reason. Kant is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Principles of Moral Legislation. Both men are shouting at you that they have recently started to reconsider their ethical stances.
