Combat width on your divisions. I'm an intellectual sort and prefer to have my units right around 40 whenever possible and highly recommend everyone do the same.

Are they worthwhile? I've never actually used 40 width divisions myself.

I use them with just about every nation now. Last time I played sorta vanilla as Germany I had 40 width inf that had arty and AT mixed in and I god damn slaughtered the Soviets with pretty much nothing but them. I'm pretty sure the USSR capitulated within a year actually.

Unless you load that with lots of infantry you'll end up with too little HP and too much death.

Back in the day I would normally just run straight 40 width heavy tanks with nothing else in the template except for support brigades but lately I've been changing it up. I've become very fond of adding motor rocket arty and you can always throw in motor AA and some mobile infantry (preferably mech but mot work too) to boost the air/soft attack while still having very high breakthrough and hard attack/piercing.

You won't make a whole army of these divisions by any means but having a few of them and microing them well can give you some good results.

I could use them in the tried and true Odessa Kiev death pocket and the always failed but hopefully will succeed one day Baltic death pocket

1.6 width divisions are where it's at.

I don't believe it's physically possible to make a division that small.

Also, new HoI IV challenge: BATTALION ONLY. All your divisions must be one battalion (I think that's possible) in size. If it isn't, the smallest possible size.

The mass assault doctrine reduces infantry combat width by 0.4 per battalion, so a division of 1 infantry battalion with mass assault would be 1.6 CW.
Challenges like this in HOI4 are pretty stupid, though, since they all boil down to having so much fighter and CAS support that it doesn't matter how terrible your army is because the AI just melts under your air support so quickly that your army is basically just there to plant the flag down. (See isorrow's artillery only video for an example - he won largely by having thousands of CAS over every air zone, which destroyed the enemy army and put his army in mop-up duty).
Now, a stupid challenge with the added rule of no planes... that has potential.
