Is anybody else having the bug where you can't hire a smith for some reason? I hit the button, but it only gives me the "Actually, now may not be the best time..." option to choose from. No idea why. It affects AI, too, apparently because the only armor/weapon/jewelry artifacts are ones that are created automatically (Reichskrone), there from the start (Iron Crown of Lombardy), or awarded through special circumstances (Crusader Helmet).

ffs i'm trying not to use cheats for this one but the game is just insisting on making me miserable

When you get that notification saying a kid needs an education focus, that's a sign to give them an education focus, instead of waiting for the game to do it for you.

I'm not stupid. The focuses were assigned before they were old enough to get the notification.

Pirates are no longer a petulant nuisance in I:R, they've been fully integrated into the mercenary system. They also talk about natural disasters, which includes a depiction of the average gamer:

So I started my first Imperator game as the Votadini in modern day Scotland.
Though the UI is awfully Paradox-y (Paradoxical?), I can see myself having fun with it.

I've had fun with it. It's a good base game that will improve well I think.

I wouldn't recommend a Scotland game for your first run though. Unfortunately you can't move capitals yet (Unless you fancy migrating your tribe, which will involve shenanigans as a settled tribe), so your capital region would always be Scotland+Ireland, with Ireland taking perhaps the whole game to colonize, leaving you substantially less troop potential than the Governor of South Britain should you ever conquer it.

It's feasible, just not great, especially as Scotland itself also requires colonization. You'd probably end up quickly being massively outnumbered even after one or two wars south of the border unless you've spent a while colonizing first.

Scotland might not be able to expand out until they reform away from Tribal government, or until they colonize a bit. Else it'll be a civil war heavy game and you'll lose those wars ;(

There's just no reason for the governor of England+Wales not to rebel, and tribal systems incentivize frequent rebellion.

A better game would be elsewhere on the Isles.

That Cornwall region could be good. Every extra grain production in the region means extra pop growth, so you can turn it into a megalopolis by the end of the game by importing slaves there.

Kent is also good, as they have the option of expanding on to the continent immediately if there's problems on the isles.

There is an out of control trolley speeding towards Jeremy Bentham, who is tied to the track. You can pull the lever to cause the trolley to switch tracks, but on the other track is Immanuel Kant. Bentham is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Critique of Pure Reason. Kant is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Principles of Moral Legislation. Both men are shouting at you that they have recently started to reconsider their ethical stances.

That's what I was thinking... It's literally just real time Omerta. Granted that's enough of a difference to get away with and Kalypso is hardly original with their ideas.

Let me break it down for you
You are a disabled but privileged white 'male' american. You never had more than one friend growing up and that one friend was unreliable as hell. Because of the neurological portion of your disability you are terrible at video games, but one day in the store you see this new gameboy game with an awesome looking monster on the front of it. you beg your mom to buy it for you. This game is the first real good game you have played in your life (maybe i got Metroid Fusion first I don't remember) the games you played before were educational movie tie-ins or games from a series that was terrible but still had cult classic games. You enjoyed this game greatly despite having no idea how to play it right. You love everything about this game and then you learn it has a cartoon, and movies, and spinoffs. You are so happy about all of it. This love continues to grow for years. you never have any serious complaints about this series. In that time you have lost so much, friends gone forever, one of the few family members you love gone before his time, your disability taking your freedom from you, beloved franchises betraying your love, people trying to kill you, questioning your own humanity because of how poorly you've been treated, losing almost every bit of joy in your life. The only thing left from your childhood is a stupid children's game that has never done you any wrong. It still makes you happy. You have spent 17 years of your life invested in this game going out of your way to events, to collect limited characters, begging your mom to drive 30 minutes to go get you a card to redeem a collectible, you have raised an army of amazingly designed characters, you spend money every year on the new game, you spend money to move all those characters to the newest game, you still have merch from when you were a toddler, you know that you'll still be playing these games when you're 55 years old all but blind, crippled by joint pain, weakened by diabetes, barely able to use your hands because of the disability you were born with, and as you sit there smiling at one of the last things that make you happy you set the game down and depart this life.

They betrayed me
