As far as the poll question, I like Imperator Rome, I bought the Deluxe edition, and I think the game actually has good mechanics besides the absolutely broken barbarian mechanic that can be easily modded out. My main complaint is that you have to have the deluxe edition for the Hellenistic flavor pack. The Diadochi cover like 1/4 of the map if not more, them having content should have been a must on vanilla.

My experience with Imperator so far has been rather meh. I'm sure they'll expand it over time, but it would've been nice to have gotten a full game at release. I have a feeling that Paradox has become complacent like Bethesda in regard to its bugs and lack of content because of the modding community which sustains their games. The biggest disappointment to me is that map editor always seems to freeze my computer, since that was one of the main reasons I bought the game.

Huh, I always had minor holy war as a casus belli. It didn't allow me to annex much, but did fortunately prevent everyone else in the region of the same religion from offering to join the defender.

If we're talking about Unreformed Pagans here, you have to Reform your pagan religion first, then pick a... The first one, that lets you declare Great Holy Wars. There's several types. Mine is Unyielding, which is a balanced trait that gives me conversion resistance, conversion bonuses, but still allows me to declare Great Holy Wars, which is what you're looking for. Warmongering is similar except it gives you the same debuff several unreformed Pagan religions do, which is losing prestige or piety for not being at war. A more different one is Cosmpolitan, which gives you diplomatic debuffs and conversion bonuses, but is less aggressive and therefore doesn't include Great Holy Wars.

You also have to wait for around 900, for the Age of Pagan Holy Wars event to kick in.

Also, yeah, big wars like this aren't something you wanna try if you're not Nomadic XD Literally everyone in Asia who isn't a Tengrist finds me threatening. I have 97% defensive threat now that I have Tibet.

There's four slots: Nature, two Doctrines, and Leadership.

Another recommendation is to make your religion Temporal, which is basically what Islam has, where a secular ruler can hold the religious office.

Not only does that mean that you start out as the Pope and your children inherit the title, you can also declare Great Holy Wars yourself so long as you hold the title, instead of having to ask for it. Oh, and you get a piety and prestige bonus. Oh, and a powerful artifact. Now that I think about it, I don't see why you'd pick anything else.

I like Equality because it means women don't sit around uselessly simply making more children that'll whine about not having titles. My dynastic females earn their keep and can takes title off my hands that I don't have to give to some dirty title-grabbing chode outside of my house. It also means there's more candidates available to take important jobs; a bigger pool means a higher likelihood of better candidates. However, I'm sure there's other Doctrines that allow you to control inheritance more directly. Agnatic IMO is kinda useless because you start out with either Agnatic or Agnatic-Cognatic, which means your males are going to inherit totally or above females, if you hate women, I guess.

And I took the unique Tengri doctrine cuz why not, might as well.

I'm more of a Japanese Africa kinda guy.

The less likely it would ever, ever happen in anybody's sickest imperialist or anti-imperialist dreams, the more I love to see it.

It's funny, with such old societies I feel kinda disconnected, especially considering we don't really know much about those societies and Imperator: Rome completely divorces us from relatable identities beyond maybe the big ones like Rome, Greece, and Carthage.

Crusader Kings 2 at least lets you invent connections wholesale from out of nowhere and EU4 forces you to identify with your chosen culture since you're going to be with them for a very long time, and at the very least, they come from SOMEWHERE, same as CK2.

I:R gives you Rome, Carthage, Greece, and... A billion tiny tribes nobody has ever heard of, and, knowing Paradox, they made up quite a few of them because nobody has records THAT meticulous of ancient Europe.

Gee, you know who I always wanted to play as. The Picts? Fuckin' whatever. The Iceni? That's some women shit.

Say what you will about, for example, Rome: Total War, which squished lots of things together and invented some crazy shit, they at least did it in the name of making the game a little more fun and making the factions recognizable.

As I say that, I very much enjoyed the more realistic approach they took with Rome: Total Realism and I love playing smaller obscure nations but R:TRealism at least justified it by giving you some info and admitting their limits.

Edit: and the less I say about Victoria 2 turning me into an imperialist, the better.

But is it the best game ever made?

I don't have the funds to drop 40 euro on Imperator, but just from everything I've gathered, it is certainly not the best. It's true that it's only 1.0, and I don't have any other Paradox games that I've played since launch (so yeah it's pretty good in that regard), but will it be one of the best in the future or nah?
