I'd be fine with primogeniture which devolves into mandatory imperial elective if you get a regency or have a mad king or some other kind of stuff.
The last Byzantine Emperor "elected" by their generals was Theodosios III in 715 - 54 years before the Charlemagne start date, making it's presence in 769 onward ahistorical. At the very least they should let me designate a co-emperor, as the Byzantines did, who can succeed me whether the army likes it or not.
