What are your favorite lyrics?

Postby Adab » Wed Jul 04, 2018 9:33 am

It's hard for me to decide out of all the lyrics that I know, but these particular lyrics, of which I have always been fond, linger in my mind. They've struck me as beautiful, intriguing, even touching, in a way that I couldn't exactly describe ever since I first listened to them:

Well the deputy walks on hard nails and the preacher rides a mount
But nothing really matters much it's doom alone that counts
And the one-eyed undertaker he blows a futile horn
"Come in," she said, "I'll give ya shelter from the storm."

Yeah, Blood on the Tracks is full of great lyricism. Continuing the 70s folk thing, I'd pick out Leonard Cohen's Songs of Love and Hate, "Joan of Arc" in particular has some really wonderful folksy story telling:
"Then fire, make your body cold
I'm going to give you mine to hold"
Saying this she climbed inside
To be his one, to be his only bride

This particular Tori Amos's song, called Siren. The chorus has always been very close to me, not just because it's one of my favorite lyrics, but because of personal matters the song depict:

''Never was one for a prissy girl
Coquette, call in for an ambulance
Reach high, doesn't mean she's holy
Just means she's got a cellular handy

Almost brave
Almost pregnant
Almost, ya know, in love
Vanilla, yes!''

I like the lyrics to a song that's pretty much half an hour in length. Yeah, a 30 minute rock song. I'll link to them here:

Cohen was one of my favorite lyricists. "Dance Me to the End of Love" is another good one: Dance me to your beauty with a burning violin / Dance me through the panic 'til I'm gathered safely in / Touch me with your naked hand or touch me with your glove / Dance me to the end of love.

This is tougher than I thought it'd be... New or classic? Indie or Mainstream? Serious or silly? In the end I could only choose one

"Some, times in our lives. We all have pain, we all have sorrow. But, if we are wise. We know that there's always tomorrow. Lean on me. When you're not strong, I'll be your friend. I'll help you carry on. For it won't be long til I'm gonna need somebody to lean on. Please swallow your pride if I have things, you need to borrow. for no one can fill, those of your needs, that you won't let show. You just call on me brother when you need a hand, we all need somebody to lean on. I just might have a problem that you'll understand. We all need somebody To lean on. If there is a load you have to bear that you can't carry, I'm right up the road, I'll share your load, if you just call me." -Bill Withers

I remember listening to his song "You Want It Darker" from the last album, and when it got to the part with the Jewish chants and I'm ready, my Lord, I thought, "Damn, that's beautiful."

These lyrics from Turbonegro: Übermensch are definitely some of my favorite lyrics of all time. And "Turbonegro" has to be one the greatest band names of all time.

Pouring rain in the desert sun
Wilhelm Reich the chosen one
Master of the mighty force of Orgone
Gay Edgar Hoover
Masturbating on his phone

Red fascists kicked him out of Oslo
Donald Sutherland
Portrayed him in a Kate Bush video
Bitter love, preaching human dignity
Wrote a book about nazi sexuality

I like the lyrics to this

Van der Graaf Generator- The Aerosol Grey Machine (lp)- Afterwards

You stare out in yellow eyes larger than my mind;
In viscous pools of joy, relaxing, we glide…
It's all too beautiful
For my mind to bear
And, as we shimmer into sleep, something's unshared

But, seeing the flower that was there yesterday
A tear forms just behind the soft peace of your shades…
The world's too lonely
For a message to slip
But between the dying rails of peace
You trip

The petals that were blooming are just paper in your hand;
Your eyes, which were clear in the night, are opaque as you stand
It was too beautiful for it to last…
These visions shimmer and fade out of
The glass

The petals that were blooming are just paper in your hand

-------------------------------------------

i especially liked the first verse when I came across it.

Survivor - "Man Against the World" is another song with some of my favourite lyrics. As been a lone man up against a hostile world, I can relate to it.

Have you ever walked alone at night
Like a man against the world
No one takes your side
A boat against the tide
When your faith is shaken you start to break
And you heart can't find the words
Tossed upon the sand
I give you a man against the world
All the people cheer 'til the end is near
And the hero takes a fall
Then they'll drag you through the mud
You're only flesh and blood
I have walked the path from dark to light
And they've yet to come to terms
Alone I take my stand
I'm only a man against the world

And love, like a distant reminder
It tugs at my shoulder
It calls me home
I shout, can a single voice carry
Will I find sanctuary within your arms
Someday when the answer's clearer
Someday when I even the score
You'll reach and you'll find me near you
Right beside you
Forevermore

But for now I'll walk the night alone
Like a man against the world
A brand new day will shine
Through the avalanche of time
Now the road's grown long, but the spirit's strong
And the fire within still burns
Alone I take my stand
I give you a man against the world
"Me Ne Frego!" (I do not give a damn!)

I will always remember Cohen for being the first artist where I listened to a song of his and thought that he didn't have much time left. I listened to his song "You Want It Darker" from the last album, and when it got to the part with the Jewish chants and I'm ready, my Lord, I thought, "Oh great, he's going to meet Bowie soon."

My first experience of Cohen was not him directly, but through another singer interpreting his ''Famous Blue Raincoat'' song. The impression I got was that he was a long suffering man. Or a masochist.

Either way, he was a great lyricist.

The lyrics to Mansion by NF are pretty good.

Especially this part:
Are you confused? Come upstairs and I'll show you what I mean
This room's full of regrets, it just keeps getting fuller, it seems
The moment I walk into it's the same moment that I wanna leave
I get sick to my stomach every time I look at these things
But it's hard to look past when this is the room where I sleep

I discovered this song because I had to describe my mind as a house and then one of my friends said that it was similar to Mansion. It was lucky that I did find it.

Circle Takes The Square - Kill The Switch

"Life is lowly, lowly anonymity
In the space of a smile I found sleep
As in sorrow, so shall ye reap, as in reason so shall ye sleep

Reap the promised end to the struggle
Reap every point on our linear path
Reap the smiles in time we borrow, every harvest relies on the last
Reap the promising song of the sparrow, that they learned from the birth of sea
Silenced by the threnody of the crows
Reap the fallen fruit of the dogwood tree

But I witnessed in all this silence one soul's definition of beauty
A backlit smile so temporary
A facade so rich with evil history
Cast in direct opposition set to overwhelm his moment to shine and sleep
Came out on top of what was borrowed, and found all that beauty to be still"

AJJ - Sad Songs

"So every now and then, I'll sing a sad song
Cause it keeps my spirit light and my conscience clean
And if you don't care to hear it, I don't mind if you go out for some air
Cause I'm happy that you're happier than me"

Oh Manhattan - Face of Another

"I will stain my arms with ink, and words that I would never speak
Cause everyone would be better off without me
Hold your breath, baby - your transmission's out of key
A subtle way to strap anchors to my body"

Bright Eyes - Road to Joy

"I have my drugs, I have my woman
They keep away my loneliness
My parents they have their religion
But sleep in separate houses

I read the body count out of the paper
And now it’s written all over my face
No one ever plans to sleep out in the gutter
Sometimes that’s just the most comfortable place

So I’m drinking, breathing, writing, singing
Everyday I'm on the clock
My mind races with all my longings
But can't keep up with what I got"

Another one that comes to my mind is "If You Could Read My Mind" by Gordon Lightfoot. Honestly I love all of the song's lyrics, so it's pretty much impossible for me to choose between them, but the lyrics that for some reason (maybe it's his singing) are seemingly stuck in my mind are:

I walk away like a movie star
Who gets burned in a three way script
Enter number two, a movie queen
To play the scene of bringing all the good things out in me
But for now love let's be real

I never knew I feel this way
And I've got to say that I just don't get it
I don't know where we went wrong
But the feeling's gone and I just can't get it back

You’re a singing star
You’re a singing star
But I see no star
Sky high, sky fly, sky dope
(We still) Same try, same scar, same work
(We still) 세상 어딜 가도
(We still) 호텔방서 작업
(I still) 오늘은 뭐로 살지 김남준 아님 RM?
We goin’ from NY to Cali
London to Paris

구름 위에 내 feel 구름 위에 check it eh oh
I don’t know, I don’t know, I don’t know, I don’t know
I don’t know, I don’t know, I don’t know, I don’t know

One of my favorite bands is Needtobreathe, and I personally love most of their lyrics, but one song that stood out for it's somber tone is Second Chances.

All my past is color
Placed inside my hands
Empty is the canvas
Patiently I plan
Stars are bright above me
That's not where I am
Greens will be behind me
Blues will make the man

I can't help but fear I've done this wrong
'Cause seldom second chances come along

Greys are all around me
Fading into black
Stars were bright above me
Won't you bring them back

I can't help but fear I've done this wrong
'Cause seldom second chances come along
If time can break us, will it make us strong
'Cause seldom second chances come along

Songwriters: Nathaniel Rinehart / William Rinehart
