I geocached for several years....found it to be a fun way to spend time outdoors with my son when he was much younger. A promotion at work made me switch shifts and commute some distance and I just kinda dropped out. My geocaching account is/was "Fried Chicken & Coffee"

Have found about a cache a year in past years, but this year I've been looking at lot more. Found two more this morning, and solved two puzzles last night that I'm aiming to get to next week. I love getting out, finding new places, and getting some exercise in the meantime (I only ride my bike or walk to get to caches).

I geocached once with some relatives and found what we were looking for. Other than that, I haven't geocached before or since.

Is it cheating finding earth caches to boost your find count?

I do legitimately go to the buildings, and answer the easy questions, but without any challenge whatsoever, it just doesn't feel right. I only look for traditional cache's now :/

As a OpenStreetMapper, geocaching is discussed in the community from time to time, but I currently have no idea about how it is functionally related to mapping.

Just learned what OpenStreetMapper is and just learned that pretty much my entire hometown isn't on there - I'm getting to work now.

Oh, it's community-run?

I assumed it was a company/professional-cartographer of some form

I like it a bit better this way, who knows the local area better than the locals?

I use my phone to decipher the rough location, because I don't have a GPS or Data, and a piece of paper with clue hints and other things to point me in the write direction.

I will invest soon though: low-tech geocaching is fun, don't get me wrong, but it ain't efficient for multi caches.

Basically you use a phone or gps to locate caches scattered pretty much everywhere.

Caches and coordinates are put on listing sites, the three main ones of which are:

  • Geocaching
  • Opencache
  • Terracache

The first is the oldest, and is a freemium run by ground speak. The second and third I don't know much about, other than the fact that you need to be sponsored by two people to access terra aching.

I've always wanted to get into it but lack GPS and lack a car, so it's pretty much impossible to do it.

Sounds interesting. Never heard of this, but I will try to research this more. Thank you!

Geocaching is fun though I haven't done it in years. Almost a decade since I've done it, but it was always interesting what you'd find. I had a friend who used to do it a ton. The geocache was a literal sofa and they watched some homeless people take it and walk off with it.

I'm amazed by the fact that they are literally everywhere, yet you don't notice them till you get the directions :)
