I would have replied sooner, but fucking Windows 10 was making my computer unusable with some update.

Windows 7 was the best. Windows 10 is the worst.

A better start to a thread would be saying what's yours and why.

I liked and used them all except for ME and 10. My favorite would have to be Windows XP, simply because it's the best choice for playing games from the early and mid 2000s era.

My old Dell Optiplex probably sees more action than my fancy 12 core gaming rig.

Windows XP and 7 are the best IMO. It's weird that they did Windows 8 and 10 but they didn't do Windows 9.

Windows 10 is in my opinion a privacy nightmare compared to Linux, as well as being too obsessed with online content.

I own a Windows 10 laptop and a Windows 7 PC, but I'd vote for Windows 7.

You might want to change the thread title to be more clear ie: What is your favourite version of Windows or What is your favourite Windows OS.

For me I did all my serious pc work back in the Windows 2000/XP/server 2003 environment so it's still pretty much my favourite as I know it the best.

After that it's 98 or 7.

At the bottom of the pile is the abortion that is ME and for general annoyance Vista.

7, partly because of nostalgia and also because of how efficient it was.

Windows XP for me. Perhaps it's the nostalgia factor, since it's pretty much the OS of my childhood, but I still think it's the most aesthetically pleasing Windows ever.

Windows 10 is objectively the best one. It's newer, has regular updates, has decent performance and the most features and options. The only thing I truly dislike about it is the inability to stop updating it for an indefinite amount of time like you could with Win 7. You can skip some optional content if you wish, however ("Creators" updates, for instance). A few really old games don't run properly on Win10, which is disappointing since this is supposed to be the most gamer-friendly OS.

BUT my favorite OS is Win7 for providing a superior alternative to the much hated Vista, back when people were choosing XP instead of Vista.

Maybe it has to do with not being an American but my PC almost never bothers me with online-related notifications. Does Win10 really require the internet so much?

Windows 10 feels like it was built with the cloud and the internet in mind, both of which I am very sceptical of at the moment. It clearly starts with Windows insisting that you to create a Microsoft account instead of a local account (the latter is semi-hidden).

I like Windows 7 for desktop usability. I've had a chance to use 10 on family's computers, and it's not so bad I couldn't use it, but I've still got a working product key for 7. I'm mostly afraid that some games I still play won't work on 10. I play Alpha Centauri, Sim City 3000, and a few older Paradox games from GoG, and also like to play Zoo Tycoon once in a blue moon. (Also the specs on this laptop are probably not up to it. I have heard people say that specs that would have been great in 2012 are poor now, and this is a low-end computer from that time.)

I like XP over 7, but could not use it today. It felt snappier and displayed file info better in my opinion. There's nostalgia about XP's application resources that will never make a comeback in newer OS's.

I used to have fond memories of using Windows 2000 on our first home computer. Those memories are all gone now. I tried it in a virtual machine a few years ago and was underwhelmed.

If the first ones are a lot like DOS, maybe even those. I really liked using Linux without X11. It's fun to see how programmers used to display information without much graphics to work with.

e: I've been on Win 10 a while now. Crusader Kings 1, Victoria 1, Sim City 3000, & The Sims 1 don't work too well or at all. Alpha Centauri is OK. My fears were well-founded and it's definitely worth keeping a computer running Windows 7 if you want to play older games. This must be how XP and 98 users felt 10 and 20 years ago. Now I finally get to be a crummy old man who plays old games and rants about stuff. lol

Better software would present a choice of involvement, and not force its user to resort to anti-spyware to disable it, to say nothing of the company's deep involvement with the United States intelligence community.

Wasn't debating the ethics of it at all, was just pointing out that there are tools out there that can be used to stop the shit. It would have been far worse if I had remained silent and not pointed out the existence of said software.
