Very true, but I think the player should have the choice so if he does do it, he would see the horrors, and see what the Nazis did and why they were evil, while those who know, would most likely not do it, then the issue of neo-Nazis playing the game for thier fantasies comes in, and you would have to find a way to counter it, like a guy in your team who is anti-nazi with you throughout the war, giving his input trying to influence the player not to take part in toe genocide, and educate the player on the horrors and why it is a horrible and unforgivable thing the germans did

I was just reading over the old posts on this thread with those arguing about a German play through, I think it would be a good idea, because a game where it does not glorify the Nazis, but it shows the men and what they went through would be a interesting game, much how letters from Iwo Jima pulled it off. How I think they should go about it is either have a recruit volunteer for the German Army whether it be for Germany or the NSDAP, then as the war progresses he is there for the fall of Paris, and then the eastern front, he then will have to make choices(the POV will be dependent on choices). One of the choices could be when your on the eastern front the SS is preparing to execute a group of civilians and your unit is watching, and you character will have the choice to step in and stop it or, just stand by and watch. If you step in then you get arrested and narrowly avoid execution for "treason" and end up in a prison camp, and when the war hits Germany, you are released into the German people militias for the battle of Berlin leading children into combat deciding whether to order them home or continue with the battle. and if you didnt step in you would be fighting in Stalingrad before being shipped back to Germany after being hit by a sniper, then you would act as a rear guard to the forces in Berlin trying to stall the Russians.

The hard part of it will be trying to humanize the Germans but not glorify the Reich or what they have done but the other issue would be how much of the atrocities do you show, do you give the player an option to skip it like the mass murder mission in MW2 or do you let people see the horrors of the Nazis, and try to educate them about it through the game which if you try to educate people through the game I think it would be effective since the younger generations would see the horrors that were committed and how every day people like the player or thier father, mother, teacher and so on could be capable of so much, and show them you must always watch to ensure evil never takes power.

Personally, I would love a game, Battlefield or no, that lets you play as a German, whether he's in the Heer, the SS, whatever, and have you do gradually more questionable things as the game goes on until you finally do somethings that are totally irredeemable and your character finally realises "holy shit, I've been the bad guy all along". A choice element like in Mass Effect or something would also be brilliant; you can try to be a 'paragon' but that'll get you nowhere except either dead or in a penal battalion. A 'renegade' playthrough would have you be a real asshole, but in doing so you're rewarded with better equipment so missions are easier. Like many have said, it would take some serious effort to get it right because, especially in this situation, it could definitely come across the wrong way.

I'd be all for a German/Italian/Japanese story, if it just involved playing a soldier of said country throughout the entire war. Same with being a French or British, or Soviet, soldier all throughout.

Besides, you can have a cool story without it being a preachy moral lesson or political. Modern Warfare was pretty great, and so was Bad Company and Bad Company 2. Gears of War was a great franchise, and it didn't beat players over the head with morality, even if the world and backstory for the COG and Pendulum Wars were grimdark.

Don't bring Battlefield back to WWII and then add female soldiers while simultaneously excluding all historically possible female militants in the entire game, and then expect it to go well when you shove it in people's face in your marketing by putting a female soldier on the cover. I have to disagree; Spain didn't really have much to do with the war. I guess they could still get away with it, since one of BF1's "In the Name of the Tsar" operations was set in 1919 and people found that okay. Personally, I'd love a return to Wake Island either in the base game or the DLC. I mean, a WW2 Battlefield without Wake is an instant disgrace, 0/10 game.

For all we know, we'll see events like the Spanish Civil War, Resistance actions across Europe and Asia, or the Red Army. Historically accurate groups with female combatants aren't out of the question yet; we just don't have enough information at the moment to say for certain.

Little late to the discussion but judging by how colorful it looks, I’m hurting inside. Real life isn’t even this vibrant. The character skins look more cartoony than realistic. I don’t want some laid back, trash-talking badass heroism. I want dark, grim reality. I want the video game equivalent of that Stalingrad (1993) film. If a T-34 can’t blow off the lower half of someone’s body and leave what’s left of them twitching to death as they go into shock, it doesn’t do the era justice.
