What books would you like to see adapted to screen?

Postby San Lumen » Thu Mar 22, 2018 9:11 am

It seems lately more and more books are being adapted to film. They are not always great but many times they are. The best ones are when the author is involved in the adaption such as The Hunger Games or the Harry Potter series.

There are several books i've read I'd like to see adapted to screen.

One series Id love to see adapted is the Area 51 series by Robert Doherty. Its a very dark and disturbing series about a alien race called the Airlia and their influence on civilization. It could be challenging to adapt though as it involves multiple plot lines that dont come together right away and its now up to ten books.

Another is The Last Magician by Lisa Maxwell. It involves magic and time travel in modern day New York.

What are some books you'd like to see adapted to film and what potential challenges could there be in adapting them?

James Wesley Rawles the Patriots
What would things have been like if every security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive? Or if during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand? The Organs would quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin's thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt!

The one I would have picked was actually Mortal Engines, by Phillip Reeve, but that one is being adapted to the big screen so yay!

Other than that I'd like to see a good film set in the universe of Warhammer 40k. Horus Heresy could be good, though it's so complicated and comprehensive that only a TV series could ever do it justice. Something like the Fall of Cadia, War for Armageddon or the Siege of Vraks would be awesome if those massive battles were done right.

Of course it's not time. It's never time, not on its own. You make it time. If you're under fire in the no-man's land of WW1, you start digging a foxhole even if the ideal time would be when you *aren't* being bombarded, because once you wait for it to be 'time', other situations will need your attention, assuming you survive that long. If the fields aren't furrowed, plow them. If the iron is not hot, make it so. If society is not ready, change it.

Halo: Fall of Reach, given the full on high budget treatment as opposed to the episodic esque “movies” Halo fans have been given like Forward Unto Dawn, Nightfall,
and Legends.

Id like also like to see the book The Rift adapted. its about a massive earthquake in the Midwest along the New Madrid Fault however it would be challenging to adapt as it has multiple plotlines and some of them never interact with the others. However it ever was adapted id like to see a slightly happier ending as the way the book ended wasn't exactly uplifting

Anything by Haruki Murakami, though the mini-series format would work best for most of his work, especially that wonderful doorstopper 1Q84. The Strange Library would make a decent cartoon, as well.

Thus Spoke Zarathustra, but a stage production would actually be far better I think.

I had a fondness for David Eddings works when I was younger, but I haven't been back to them in a while so I don't know how well they've aged.

Id also like to see New York the Novel adapted. Its a history of New York City presented through the eyes of fictional people interacting with historical figures. I doubt it would work as a film but it would would make a phenomenal tv series.

Ann Leckie's Imperial Radch series would be an interesting one to see adapted to film or television, because the vast majority of characters are 1) referred to exclusively by female pronouns regardless of their physical sex, and 2) black. Could you imagine how hard people would freak out? A 95% black cast, if not higher, all referred to as "she".

Any fiction by Isaac Asimov, including a I, Robot which needs to be redone since the last one was basically just a cringy advertisement for Dos Equis beer and Converse shoes. Same for Stanisław Lem. Solaris has never been given the treatment it deserves with the film versions always focusing too much on the love story. I always thought his short story collections would make good televisions show since they usually follow the same characters. Some of the themes might be hard for audiences in some countries to grasp since they were intended as jabs against communism subtle enough to get past communist censorship, but some could probably be adapted to militant SJW ideology.

Worm, by Wildbow.
Holy fuck I want to see it adapted. It's probably not possible, but it would be amazing if they pulled it off.
Have a different famous director and such manage each Interlude chapter, and overall do it in the style of peep show maybe.

I'd get to enjoy everyone I know going along with the story and not knowing what comes next. All the Red Wedding moments...

There is an out of control trolley speeding towards Jeremy Bentham, who is tied to the track. You can pull the lever to cause the trolley to switch tracks, but on the other track is Immanuel Kant. Bentham is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Critique of Pure Reason. Kant is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Principles of Moral Legislation. Both men are shouting at you that they have recently started to reconsider their ethical stances.

If there's another I Robot film, it needs to be based on Harlan Ellison's screenplay. If you haven't read it, I recommend you do.
