Conlangers of Nationstates, does your nation have a conlang?

Postby NewLeinster » Mon Nov 27, 2017 8:26 am

Greetings Conlangers!

The question in the title is a bit vague because there's a character limit, but esentially: Did you make a conlang for your nation?Would you recommend it to people interested in conlangs?

I'm thinkings of really developing my nation's lore, and since I have made conlangs in the past I'm thinking of creating one for my nation.

USS Monitor speaks English because it's based on a historical ship that was manned by New Yorkers, but I have a conlang for one of my puppets. I know there are some other players that have conlangs of their own.

If you like conlanging and you have a nation where it fits, then why not?

I've been thinking of making one! It'd probably be a mix of existing languages rather than a new one though, so more of a concreole?
I don't have any energy for sig creation rn, I'll do it later. ;_;

Yes, it is called Dawetidish, which uses loanwords from Chinese (with Middle Chinese pronunciation). Because it occasionally uses Chinese characters among the two other scripts, a speaker of one language, even with no prior knowledge of the other, can make an accurate guess of the meaning 80 % of the time.

To show that these languages are almost mutually intelligible when written, here is an example sentence:
Dawetidish - Latin only: Dávḕtʹə́d M̆jìnk̆vók hī̀ T̆ruŋk̆vákcū-də̀ dē̃-jítm̆jìncṓ ğjũŋvā̀k̆vók.
Dawetidish - mixed: Dávḕtʹə́d 民國 hī̀ 中郭洲 də̀ 第一民主 共和國
Chinese - standard: 達偉特民國中郭洲民主共和國
English: The Republic of Dawetid is the first (ordinal - one) democratic republic in Central Quark.

(For creation, I made hī̀ from 係、də̀ from 的、or from 個,but those are considered as false cognates.)

I created it because, being fluent in Chinese, having a solid knowledge of Japanese, and interested in Korean and Vietnamese, I wanted my country to also be part of the Sinosphere.

I'm planning on making one soon, but I just noticed 'Conlang' is basically newspeak for Constructed language. After a few seconds, I've decided that I need to put down 1984.

I've got enough of Kommin to make some basic sentences, which has been suiting my needs so far. I hope to expand and flesh it out in the future so I can make some more complex works in Kommin, although translating things already takes a lot of time since I'm not fluent in Kommin by any stretch. Still, putting together Kommin has been a fun learning experience which has even helped me develop the culture of Komminland beyond language.

I have three factbooks which deal specifically with Kommin so far:
All in all, I'd definitely recommend making a conlang if you're interested. It might take a bit of reading up if you're not familiar with a few linguistics concepts, but conlangs are a continual learning experience.

Nope. I set our only language to be English because I'm too lazy to create an entirely new one. If you manage to make a conlang for your nation, then you really must have got a creative and patient mind.

I just recycled stuff I made up for a novel a long time ago.

The nations I've made strictly for NS purposes (New Somersetshire, Nazi Flower Power, etc.) don't have conlangs. Nor do the historical ones like USS Monitor or The Weimar Republic.

But Ixintaza Ra-ii does because it's borrowed from an old unfinished novel. "Ixintaza Ra-ii" means "Confederate States of the Highland" in their language. Ra-ii grammar is almost identical to Latin, but the vocabulary is unrelated.

I remember on my first big nation I worked with from 2009 until 2014 I had a conlang that used a 67 letter alphabet, based on the standard 26 English alphabet but with every bullshit diacritical I could put in. I remember characters using words like "Kjiçláś" and "Xhôlxhíšç" as common vernacular. Not to mention ugly words I made up like "Äähjïbævûltrhjhãnãyk" because I though aglutination was cool. I distinctly remember the sentence "Óhzńym vœż hęyníkyãnîbūr" translating to "pass the beer". It was a silly conlang with grammatical errors rules I made up in the spot as it suited me. Glade I stop trying to actually use this in any NS forum.

Note that the factbook is a bit outdated since it's not that recent and I keep changing some things in the language. Even though a lot of people like it (see the 26 upvotes), I'm personally not a huge fan but I'm sticking with it anyway because it's hard to make a language all by yourself.

That's the answer I've been looking for!Looks really good!

Really interesting syllable structure and cases: Benefactive isn't that common of a case, since most of it can be put under Dative.

You know how we have separate words "he" and "him" that mean the same thing except for being used different places in the sentence? Those are different cases. "He" is the nominative case, and "him" is accusative. In English, we only do this for pronouns, but there are some languages that do the same thing for nouns.

Declinations are the different forms of a noun, the same way conjugations are different forms of a verb. English sentence structure relies almost entirely on word order rather than declination. In a heavily inflected language like Latin, declination is a big thing, but word order usually doesn't matter.

My main uses a slightly-developed constructed languages, although two of my puppets are supposed to use conlangs (one is supposed to be a heavily-altered version of the Seraphim language from Supreme Commander Forged Alliance & the other doesn't really exist but I would like for it to be based off of some real life languages).

For my main, the language of Demonish has changed a fair amount from when I first created it some one to two years ago — you can see how it was like at first with Parfuhmerie, Fa'l-Asandrau, & the momentarily-mentioned Varepohlu. Nowadays, the language has evolved into having a lot more apostrophes & one that I've described to be characterized by "low, guttural sounds," although it's debatable whether it really is, but I imagine that speaking the language with a high-pitched voice would sound off to native speakers of Demonish. At first, I wanted Demonish to sound like Russian, but I'm not sure if I've achieved that goal. At minimum, I do distort some Russian words to use in Demonish:
Shwe Tu Colony wrote:"Ji'ce ji'le'tizsh! Ce nebk'yern! Ji'ce ji'ze ji'su'kir"

In a possible way of writing it out such that it's how ti sounds:
Juh see juh leh tizsh (zsh like in usual)! Ceh nebik yern! Juh see juh zhee juh soo kyir (like the "cur" in cure)

Some rules on the language in my factbook posts
If you do not refer to yourself, begin your sentence with "ce."
If you do refer to yourself, begin every word with "ji."
Trill your "r"s.
When there is an apostrophe between letters, start a new syllable (e.g. "ce barqu'ela" (means "you eat cake") would have the second part pronounced as "barqu eela instead of barquela).

This was earlier in my Nationstates career, but with those first two rules, I mean at all, as seen above in the piece of dialogue where Sekka says "ji'ce" to denote that he's speaking both about himself & someone not himself (however, in one of my posts, I don't obey this rule since it was before I wrote these rules). I may decide to translate or write a short sample of text to figure out more rules & words that I want for Demonish, although I'll probably end up contradicting a lot of Demonish I already have. Speaking of, I could definitely write a short piece of the book I have mentioned once that was published in Parfuhmerie & would thus be written in Demonish.

Note: this conlang is currently been constructed, so it's unfinished.

Valkyrie Sprak, a conlang made up of 40+ existing languages. It depends on the context of the word, so for example, "A human heart" vs. "Have a heart", the word "heart" will undergo a language change because of the context between biology and feeling. Non-Latin languages will be transliterated or romanized.

English: Valentine Z’s country has 6 million people.
Valkyrie Sprak: Valentine Z’s Landsort quod six milioane Lidé.

English: Hello ! Thank you for trying to reach me. Unfortunately, I am not free at the moment. Send me a message.
Valkyrie Sprak: Ahoj ! Merci fir yrittää ze pahunch mech. Ar an drochuair, Ech sinn net liber momenteel. Ærendian mech un Viesti.

English: Men talk of killing time, while time quietly kills them. ~Dion Boucicault
Valkyrie Sprak: Muži praten van doden Tijd, terwijl Zäit mallaŭte uergt Ils. ~Dion Boucicault

English: It’s the journey in-between that makes it fun.
Valkyrie Sprak: Het is der Reis zwischendurch datt provést To spraoi.

Aelish, which is basically phonetically correct English, meaning, its words are spelled the way they are pronounced and also they are vocabulary correct. So that means some letters are removed from the English language such as "c" as it is as seen redundant.

An example of it is "kar", which is the Aelish of car.
If the plural form of goose is geese then in Aelish, the plural form of moose is meese, not moose/mooses (both are seen as correct in my irl country).

Yes. Rezmaeri is a conlang based on various South-Central Asian languages, such as Farsi, Tajik, Pashto, Kashmiri, and Kurdish.
Pro:Cultural Nationalism, Traditionalism, Workers' Rights, Fascism, Legal Equality, Limited Immigration, Environment
Anti:Capitalism, Communism, Globalism, Progressivism, Mass Immigration, Imperialism, Equality of Outcome,
Rezmaeristan mostly represents my views, but in some ways represents stereotypes of fascist countries.
