Absolutely stole this idea from Bralia, I decided the first proper eu4 game I play in a while will be Muscovy > Russia. I'd say it's going pretty well, but my troops have this weird habit of completely melting when losing one battle, so i have to rebuild stacks quite often.

I'm just bad at EU4. Maybe I just have to accept this.

Then again, I've only ever played as the Papal States, Ayutthaya, and the fucking Haida, so maybe I'm just choosing shitty starts idk.

Those are definitely less than ideal starts for a newb. Haida is only for playing who enjoy pain and suffering, Ayutthaya is for people who need to kiss ass to the Chinese Emperor for 2/3rds of the game, and the Papal States . . . not the worst choice, but you're still fighting an uphill battle because other major nations love to stick their fingers in Italy.

I highly recommend playing an Iberian power. Portugal if you want to play a peaceful-ish game, Castile if you want to play a powerful colonizer game, Aragon if you want to stay involved in Mediterranean politics.

I'll be honest and this might be an unpopular opinion but I think that Victoria 2 is my least favorite among the PDX historical strategy games.

It's thus far the only one I've played. I like the historical nature of it, and how it doesn't - well- make 'going willy nilly' easy. Like- I see so many players on here talking about will nilly conquests rather then the intricacies of alternate history and time periods. Victoria seems to be a series that has such as a focus.

It might seem odd, perhaps. I say it might as I've not expressed this, but Total War Empires (not Paradox) seemed to use history as a backdrop rather then a real focus, and to have a bit too large of a military focus for my liking. War may be a part of history, but it's certainly not a part I explore deeply.

For example, rather then talk about the battles of WWII I'd prefer to talk about Hitler's Anti-Smoking Campaign and Germany's Nuclear program in relation to the V2 and space exploration as envisioned by Braun in a discussion regarding alternate history.

Death is death, it happens daily so it's not of a great interest to me and that's largely what I see with war is just death. So it's rather boring to me unlike scientific advancements, exploration, and discovery.

That's what I like about the Victorian era- discovery, adventure, invention, colonization, and the like.

My 50% warscore in that screenshot says you can't. It was a slog to get there, but only because the Ottoman alliance with Blobhemia made me fight on two fronts.
