Probably to put Luke at ease. This allowed him to sit down and have a nice, relaxing chat with an old friend.

It was then Luke realized that if Obi-Wan could interact with the physical world, he could have helped fight Vader. He chose not to because he wanted Luke to fail.

And so began Luke’s distrust of the Jedi. That’s why he abandoned it! Brave Nolan Lucas!

He's not, he's ghost floating where the log would be.

That’s just what he wants you to think. Why would a ghost be tired anyways?

The dark truth is that the old Jedi wanted Luke to fail. They could have physically fought against the Empire by his side, but they didn’t because they’re old geezers who just want the younger generations to suffer for their loud music and holograms with colors besides blue. That’s why Luke walked out on everything. The Jedi were mean to him.

Or the log was pushing out the Force, meaning Ghosti-Wan was sitting on a continuous pulse of the Force.

Well, he was obviously...uh.

They needed him to...um...do...well, y'know. Things.

I guess in TPM he says "I will make it legal" of the invasion, which maybe suggests he'd previously put through legislation that favoured them.

In the old EU, the TF was founded by humans. Sidious engineered the ascension of the Nemoidians in exchange for their loyalty.
