Then why does it matter if Ackbar represents the past in some way?

It doesn't hugely, because Ackbar isn't close to being an important character. It's a small nod to the theme which, sure,
would still stand without Ackbar's death. I think it contributes nicely, though, and it's probably best for the plot (Ackbar was in TFA, therefore he's with the fleet, therefore we need him out the way so that the unknown Holdo can take command).

And I'm saying it was purely unnecessary and also insulted his character.

Complaining about an insult to a character who would have been forgotten but for a meme is odd. Ackbar is barely even a character.

You say it's unnecessary, but if Ackbar had been in the background throughout TLJ, I'll bet you'd have complained about Holdo being in charge.

Because Bearon was being petty. Really, we should all switch to one or the other, but instead we just all seem to be posting in both.

Bearon is very level headed and cares little for the drama.

That is why he responds to every single post that could vaguely be interpreted as referring to it.

And refuses to put up a simple opinion poll because clearly any opinion that disagrees with his is uninformed and will inevitably change with time.

But some people on the internet loving a background character for silly reasons isn't a compelling reason for forcing yourself to write around them.

Referenced in what way? He was on the Resistance's base, so unless he stayed behind (and therefore died) he'd have to be on the fleet.
