Pretty much every major player in Medieval Europe with two exceptions; you cannot control the Papal States (though you can interact specially with them, if your nation is Catholic), and you can't play the Mongols.

Yeah, although you can play the Mongols, I think, in the Teutonic Expansion, which is, of course, the second best Campaign. I found the actual main campaign to be a bit tedious when compared to the others, although I certainly liked Venice's Militia Crossbowmen. A godsend, those.

No, they suck, I hate them. Though I usually play HRE, so... that's probably why. They really are superior units, similar to Norse Swordsmen (Danish).

So long as you keep them in a town, no upkeep needed, IIRC. Early investment, suddenly, you've got yourself an unstoppable defense force for all your towns and Castles, and not a penny out of pocket. Fairly effective too.

Yeah, I hate them. They get the damned pavise shields right off the bat, do yo know how damn hard it is for HRE to get Pavise Crossbowmen? Really damn hard! :p

Unfortunately the Danish cap at crossbowmen, and don't get them until the second-to-last castle upgrade or whatever, at which point it's not even that worth it, compared to other nations ranged capabilities.

Forget the Rome vs Empire (Although I definitely think Rome takes the prize for game play, Empire for just looking so damn good.)

I just brought back the original - Shogun: Total War WARLORD EDITION. Found it at the Game Stop in Osan, South Korean while I was down there for exercises. For the low low price of only $2.50. My Total War collection is complete and i have them all. They are definitely what brought me into hardcore PC gaming.

You make money through taxation, and trade. Best Russian unit at the start? Probably the General's Bodyguard. Best actual unit, I'm not sure, I only play good factions! :p

Download Stainless Steel from twcenter in kingdoms mods. It is the only way to play Medieval 2. Medieval 1 is fun, I personally think it's the best in the series, though my tastes differ from most. I mostly enjoyed the level of detail you could get into and how personal everything was. Every army unit had a specific commander, who had specific stats and traits, and you could give them specific titles and such. It was great fun to me, though by 1260 I had almost all of Europe and suffered dozens of rebellions per turn.

There is a Russia in the Grand campaign but just to warn you they are one of the hardest factions to play as. The surrounding settlements you can conquer don't offer much money and being Greek Orthodox the are exiled by the Catholic and Islamic factions

If you cannot run the game on your computer, I'd suggest you buy Europa Universalis III, instead.

It's played in semi-Real Time, except you can pause at any time and issue orders while paused. You do not directly control your armies during battle, but aside from that, the concept is identical. You can play from 250 historical factions, in any time period between 1453 and 1789 - including Russia. Hell, you can even play as the Grand Duchy of Moscow before 1547 and unite the independent Russian territories yourself.

You can wage war, manage your economy, improve your territories, use diplomacy, etc. The whole shebang. It is far less graphically intense than Empire and they get roughly the same approval from Metacritic. Plus, if you buy the Europa Universalis Complete pack, you can get both the original EU III and its expansion packs.

No. If you can't play ME2 on your compy with the graphics turned all the way down, do NOT get EU3. It's a beautiful game, but if you have a computer of that caliber, you'll end up learning Latin from a handbook and memorizing every word in the dictionary by the time it's done loading.

Anyone else played King Arthur?

It's ME2 with RPG elements.

Kicks ass.
