On the other hand, maybe no more of the MCU's morally questionable shit?

It's not just Stark, it's...literally nothing from the previous 4 movies he's appeared in can be used.
So I expect Sony will shit the bed and give us a reboot, and we'll have to go through the origin story yet again.

An important caveat is thar Marvel keeps the merchandising rights to sell things like toys and other products. When you account for the fact that Disney is also getting 100% of the indirect revenue from the films, it makes sense why Sony would be hesitant to give them any ground.

They do a lot of lobbying whenever Mickey Mouse is close to becoming public domain.
Spider-Man would have been public domain by now if not for these many extensions.
So, yeah. Bit of irony there.

Disney already had the merchandising rights, though. It wouldn't have been a change. Sony didn't actually ask for anything, it just went "nah" and peaced out.

Yeah, but Disney asked for more then they were already getting, cutting into Sony's profits more than they were. That's just flexing corporate muscles, I wouldn't doubt if sicking the fans on Sony was part of the plan.
Of course, you're also right in that Sony was being a douche canoe by not even counteroffering. Both aren't exactly blameless here.
