1979: An election in Bordeline produces the first Savior of Nature party government. Lead by Dale Eisen, the new government promises a radical agenda to protect the environment. In the same election, a new Naecetarian party gains 3 seats in the assembly, making them the first politicians elected under that banner.

Negotiations between Sigilite and Notching continue inconclusively. The writing though is on the wall: Sigilite is simply too small to really stand up to Notching, much less be a credible leader for all Zaranists. This was fine while Zaranist countries were small or poor, but with both Jenniferia and Notching in the Zarintern... yeah.

Del-Kasha's purging frenzy hits a high point of intensity... but then the Frontier Commonwealth gets involved and warns Jaka Hayter to calm down. With the barely recovering from war state of Del-Kasha, Jake realises he would be no match for the Commonwealth so backs down.

Meanwhile, intrigue in Southvalen, capital of Jenniferia. The politburo's leader has been found dead with a knife sticking out of his back. The design is of a Sigil Coast traditional fish knife, but the nation and the rest of RAD deny having committed the murder.

1980: Bordeline, under Dale Eisen, started to reduce the army to only stand as a defensive force. He also banned lead use for gasoline, as well as every day civilian products, like paints. He also started a research on renewable energy, hoping for it to replace the fossil fuel. Experimental solar and wind plants are construed.

The Naecetarians ran campaigns that aimed to promote them. In the process, they also promoted a new type of song that people started to enjoy, reggae and rap.

A breakthrough occurred when Sigilite's leader gets replaced by a more moderate one after the previous one stepped down for health reasons. The new leader, named Henry Tacker, agreed with Zhao Li and the rest of the Zaranist leaders in a Zarintern summit, that the leadership of the Zarintern will be equal, with the member nation leading it rotating every five years. In a compromise, Notching is selected first to lead the Zarintern.

What the people don't know is that the killing of the Politburo leader is performed by a member of the Delegates, who wanted to frame Sigil Coast and the RAD for the murder. This plan caused tensions to increase between RAD and Zarintern. Later that year, a plane from Frontier Commonwealth was blown up while flying over Kargazastan, causing debris to fall over a town, killing 9 people on the ground and everyone on the plane, a Stov V7X (which is like an Airbus A320).

The Grey Corporation, meanwhile, grow to encompass every sectors on the economy, through their subsidiaries.

In Del-Kasha, by the time the purge was stopped, most leftists had been eradicated. Meanwhile, in the WA, the delegate purge, done by George Dolet, finally happened.

1981: Initially in the Liberated Commonwealth of Jenniferia (LCJ), the murdered politburo leader was replaced by a dithering moderate, but this year the various factions outmanoeuvre him and force a resignation. Instead, Tom Farris is make leader of the Zaranist nation. Still top of the agenda is solving the murder and blaming RAD for it.

It was a difficult year for RAD. Bordeline's new wayward ways earn them a rebuke from the RAD treaty, arguing that the threat of the Zarintern is greater than any from the environment. In response, Dale Eisen makes a few token increases to the army just to appease the alliance. The regime however intensifies its scientific research. Kargazastan begins negotiations to join the RAD treaty alliance this year. It's a controversial inclusion as the nation is both... only questionably a democracy but also a nation that recovered very weakly from the last great war to become essentially a glass cannon.
Oh and of course they are busy denying the murder. They launch their own investigation to try and find the culprit. Sigil Coast, for obvious reasons, takes the lead in it. In a bizarre mirror image, RAD blames the plane crash on the Zarintern, who in retaliation deny the charges and set up their own investigation.

The domestic chaos in the LCJ means they can only send a lowly envoy to a great Zarintern summit of national leaders. The other leaders point to the poor envoy and cite their very presence among this convention as proof that the Zarintern needs to stand together and strong against the clearly evil capitalist and commonwealthist powers.

The WA sends a peacekeeping force to a small country on the other side of the world experiencing civil war. This intervention ends the conflict in weeks, and thus becomes a model on how to do humanitarian interventions.

The microwave is sold this year in Helaxion.

Or atleast almost." - The Emperor.

1982: The Helaxion Microwave Company, now awash with money, begins acquiring a string of small companies, from washing machine distributors to arms manufacturers, quickly increasing it's influence in the country.

In Sigil Coast, a leading police chief is found with Delegate reading materials in his home, leading to the exposure of a vast network of Delegate supporters, with the 250 people being arrested. The lead detective, Hugo Monteviaus, is soon tipped to be the next Minister of Justice.

In Portbarry, the government completes construction of a vast network of underground bunkers, with many miles of tunnels and wiring. Some say the network extends beyond the city-state's borders, but this is dismissed by the government as "completely absurd".

Wow, I'm pleasantly surprised to see this still running! Actually, we might even make it to 2018...

1983:

For the most part, after the chaos of the late 1970s, this is a quiet year.

Kargazastan-RAD negotiations result in Kargazastan becoming an observer of the RAD. They technically aren't a full member, but the other members of the RAD don't really care and start funneling weapons to the nation anyways. These efforts are probably worthwhile, as there is still a significant faction loyal to the Zarintern within Kargazastan...

Meanwhile, the WA intervention in the small country (you know what, lets call it Brazilistan) begins to be... not so much of a model. Rumors are growing that the "intervention" is really just a Delegate-run power grab. Despite George Dolet's massively successful initiative (which eventually lead to him becoming General Secretary of the WA), it will take a while before the world finally regains trust in the WA.

Reports of Jenniferians fleeing the Liberated Commonwealth digging tunnels under Alexi's Wall to the nearby Portbarrian tunnel network are, of course, dismissed by both the Portbarrian and Jenniferian governments.

Within delegate circles, ideas are floated about assassinating Hugo Monteviaus, or George Dolet, or both.

1983, continued:

Hugo Monteviaus is appointed Minister of Justice in the Sigil Coast, and begins a vast plan to eliminate Delegate operatives in the government. The Minister, known for his blunt attitude, names the operation "Operation Eliminate Delegate operatives in the government", but the press soon refer to it as "The Defenestration", after a suspected delegate is accidentally hurled out of a window.

The Helaxion Microwave Company begins expanding into other countries, launching their new D18S microwave and grill in Portbarry, Sigil Coast and Kargazastan. Rumours begin spreading that the machines are bugged, as people seem to be receiving promotional material about things they mention in the vicinity of their ovens, but these concerns are dismissed by the HMC as "patently absurd".

1984... a lucky year...

Early 1984:

The Defenestration escalates after a Delegate operative plants a bomb in Hugo Monteviaus’ car right before an official meeting as Minister of Justice. Fortunately a last minute change of plans results in Monteviaus remaining unharmed, and the attempt increases popular support for Monteviaus’s initiatives. However, in the rest of the world, the “anti-Delegate movement” as it is now being called, is facing some criticism and backlash for going too far and sometimes accusing innocent people.

The Helaxion Microwave Corporation changes its name to Helaxic Appliances and announces plans to expand into new markets. However, the company is still only three years old and not even breaking even (in terms of profits) yet, so they’re far less of a threat than they seem...for now.

The RAD once again demands that Bordeline contributes more to the anti-Commonwealthist cause. The Saviors of Nature, of course, refuse to give in. There is now a large faction within the RAD calling for the removal of Bordeline from the alliance-or, an even more radical idea, backing a coup to remove the Saviors of Nature from power...

Notable Jenniferian official James Jenninkoff defects to Portbarry while on a diplomatic mission, causing a brief international relations kerfuffle. Meanwhile in Jenniferia, Zaranist bureaucrats scramble to appoint a successor...

June 3rd, 1983: James Jenninkoff is hospitalized after collapsing in the street, with a small wound to his lower right forearm.
June 4th, 1983: Jenninkoff's condition rapidly worsens. An unknown poison is suspected.
June 5th, 1983: A small pellet is found in the forearm wound, leading investigators to identify this is the source of the poisoning.
June 6th, 1983: Jenninkoff passes away in his sleep. A bunch of flowers is delivered to his family in Jenniferia. The card included with the flowers simply says "Don't". Meanwhile in Portbarry, a cache of documents found in the possessions of Jenninkoff is rapidly distributed among the various intelligence services.

1985: A Delegate of the 18th Sun supporter walks up to George Dolet, pulls out a revolver, and shoots him multiple times at pointblank range. However, he (frankly, miraculously) survives the attack and is soon rushed to hospital. There he recovers well enough, though the bullets through his shoulder mean that he will never be able to use his left arm for much of anything ever again. Obviously, the would-be assassin is easily captured.

The Jenninkoff family, perhaps sensibly, decides to stay quiet about the death of their beloved James.

Elections in the Frontier Commonwealth sees gains for a new Naecetarian party, and sees several Saviours of Nature types elected.

Meanwhile, the Grey Corporation purchases Helaxic Appliances.

In Legane City, a 'groovy' new song comes out by an almost completely unknown band, which soon takes the world by storm. People groove out to it and the many 'inspired' works that come out all over the place.

Also, in the Sigil Coast a man literally preaches that people should give him money to get to a great afterlife. Amazingly, the scheme works and the con artist collects millions of donations before being arrested for fraud.

1986: An unknown vessel torpedoes both a Jenniferian and a Sigil Coast ship within days of each other. No trace of the unknown vessel is found, and both the RAD and the Zarintern blame each other. 36 Jenniferian and 25 Sigil Coast souls are lost to the icy depths. Survivors from both ships describe the mystery vessel as "Jet black, with most of the hull suspended out of the water, and no identifying marks".

Late 1986:

Both the RAD and the Zarintern vaguely guess that the mysterious black watercraft attacks are probably the doing of the Delegates. Nevertheless, tensions remain high, especially as another attack occurs near the end of the year. Jenniferia, the Sigil Coast, Telvarsland and Notching all send fleets to track the vessel down.

The Liberated Commonwealth of Jenniferia begins to face some... internal... problems. They’ve been good at hiding this, but years of stagnation and mismanagement have taken their toll on the economy. In addition, they no longer have their ally and breadbasket, the Frontier Commonwealth, around to help out now that the FC’s been kicked out of the Zarintern. The result is that the prolonged economic stall that Jenniferia has been in begins to get worse...

The Sylax-Darr-Prixion Conglomerate buys the rapidly growing Helaxic Appliances division from Grey Corporation. Incidentally, the Conglomerate is currently under investigation by the Helaxic government for possibly being a front of the SDP. [1]

[1]Context for new posters, since it’s been a while since the SDP came up: The SDP is a splinter faction of the Delegates of the 18th Sun. It uses similar tactics but has a long running rivalry with the main faction of Delegates.

31st December, 1986: Jennifer Nonavus, Deputy Minister of Justice in the Sigil Coast, is exposed as a delegate agent. She had been running interference for the Delegates, allowing many Delegate operatives to slip beyond the reach of the Defenestration. She manages to slip away, and is last seen being taken about another Delegate vessel, which then slipped away, into the night.

In secret, several Frontier Commonwealth diplomats approach the RAD, to discuss an alliance.

Even more secretly, a group of Delegates and SDP operatives meet in the sparsely populated badlands of Telvarsland, discussing the future of their two organizations.

Let's show some love to some of the smaller countries in this epic. :p

1987: Tom Farris, the leader of the Liberated Commonwealth of Jenniferia, is a hardliner who cannot see why there is a problem. Instead, he blames Legane City and Portbarry, arguing that these small countries are wayward provinces that really should be reintegrated into the main thing by now.

A Relsinian submarine is sunk by the mystery vessel. With that, the Sigil Coast declares that thing a threat to all of RAD and so all members deploy their navies to search for it.

World Assembly peacekeepers bust a series of warehouses and docks in Del-Kasha that were being used by the Delegates of the 18th Sun. However, it quickly emerges that these facilities were used for smuggling, and that even the people captured here have no idea as to who is going around randomly sinking ships.

Meanwhile in tiny Nouveau-Roi, the election results are disputed, with allegations of rigging by the losing side. As negotiations and brinkmanship by the politicians happen, there are numerous killings on the streets by angry mobs. Several Zarintern countries are more than happy to illegally smuggle weapons to the country, Tom Farris of the LCJ even declaring that it will be the next stage of the glorious worldwide revolution.

Regulators in Helaxion declare the Sylax-Darr-Prixion Conglomerate a monopoly, and order executives to break up their operations.

August, 1987: Breaking up the Sylax-Darr-Prixion Conglomerate turned out to be a bad decision. SDP, who, to the shock of no-one, had been bankrolling the entire operation, were understandably upset, and began pumping funding into various Helaxic opposition groups.

A Sigil Coast vessel engages a Delegate vessel off the coast of Telvarsland, however the damage is superficial, and the Delegate vessel escapes.

October, 1987: In Helaxion, an opposition group, the unimaginatively named Opposition Group, seized control of the town of Acehaim, in the west of the country. Other opposition groups throughout the country see this as a signal, and begin an uprising. Within days, the country plunges into civil war.

The Frontier Commonwealth applies to join the RAD, as an observer.

November, 1987: A third player emerges in the Helaxic Civil War, an alliance of opposition groups who begin engaging in skirmishes with both government forces and the SDP-backed Opposition Group. They seem to share many tactics and strategies with the latter...

Meanwhile in Portbarry, the synth-pop band Egad soars to the top of the charts with the hit single "Delegate".

February 1988:

In secret, the delegates and the SDP, both of which have been decimated by Defenestration-style purges in several different countries, agree to a temporary truce that will last for 10 years.

Shortly afterwards, the "Tertium Faction" joins the Opposition Group. With their support, Opposition Group forces begin pushing east from Acehaim and are now threatening Jarnisgrad, a major city further east that controls the route to the Helaxic capital.

The Helaxic government panics. Not only are the Delegates and SDP gaining power, there's also threats from various other groups such as the Helaxic Commonwealthist Party, the military, and the Saviors of Nature. For the moment all three groups have their own grudges with the SDP, are relatively moderate, and remain loyal to the government, but that could change soon.

The world's attention is split between the situation in Helaxion and a similar crisis in Nouveau-Roi, where the Liberation Party of Nouveau-Roi is accusing the government and the RAD of rigging elections in order to prevent a left-wing party from coming to power. Rioting continues with no end in sight, and rumors are spreading that the LPNR is stockpiling arms and preparing for an open rebellion. The LPNR is vaguely Commonwealthist-whether or not it is Zaranist, and whether or not it is being funded by the Delegates to distract from the situation in Helaxion, really depends on which side of the rioting you ask.

Will the FC send arms to the increasingly radical LPNR, create their own moderate Commonwealthist faction, or help the current Nouveau-Roi government restore order? This decision may determine whether or not the (still continuing) negotiations between the FC to join the RAD succeed, and the direction of the FC's foreign policy for the next few decades.

March, 1988:

To avert further crisis, the Helaxic government gives the HCP and the Saviors of Nature key positions in the government, and grants the military near-unlimited funding, in an attempt to keep them all on their side.

The Opposition Group seizes Jarnisgrad, and begins pushing towards the capital. However, a shootout between two street gangs in Acehaim quickly devolves into a city-wide fire-fight, as numerous groups try to take control of the city.

The Frontier Commonwealth backs the government of Nouveau-Roi, to the pleasure of the RAD. However, some within the Frontier government disagree, and begin funneling money to various front organizations within Nouveau-Roi.

In Portbarry, Sophie Jones-Kell-Helaxis-Egad is elected Prime Minister, leading the relatively new Portbarian Pirate Party (or P3). She is one of the most popular political figures the city-state has ever seen, and has tried to distance herself from the misdemeanors of some of her ancestors.

In Telvarsland, a document passed to the Internal Intelligence Agency (IIA), reveals a vast network of Jenniferian spies within the country. However, it appears there may be a mole in the agency, as, despite swift action, around 30% of the agents manage to slip away.

July 1988:

Things in Nouveau-Roi calm down somewhat. Due to their help, the Frontier Commonwealth is admitted into the RAD, albeit as an observer.

Some suspicions are raised about Sophie Jones-Kell-Helaxis-Egad's family connections to the Delegates. These are dismissed by her supporters as rumors created by her political opponents. For the most part, she remains very popular.

The "Acehaim Shootout" continues and by the end of Summer 1988 the splintered factions, gangs, drug cartels, Delegate and front organizations, have turned the city into a bloody mess. Helaxion in general is becoming a humanitarian disaster. At least the government is able to take advantage of the situation and take back Jarnisgrad...

With the chaos in Helaxion, Helaxic Appliances is pretty much dead. However, some of their technology is kept by the SDP, who decide that it might be useful for their operations...

OOC: Let's try and resurrect this, on the off chance anyone has any idea what the hell is going on!

August 1988: Seeing no end in sight to the Helaxic crisis, the World Assembly (OOC: which I think still exists...), against the opinion of the majority of member states, deploys the WASPS into the country, attempting to restore order. This is not taken well by anyone, resulting into the whole mess degenerating further.

In Portbarry, the now independent Portbarian division of Helaxic Appliances renames itself DelegCom, and launches the first commercial mobile telephone, the DC-1. Although incredibly expensive, it is a modest success.
