Rome(TV Series)

Postby LollerLand » Tue Jan 10, 2017 2:13 am

'Remember the Rubicon' thread in General made me realize that many people here are interested in the stpry of Julius Caesar and Augustus Caesar. Rome was a tv series that used to air in BBC and HBO based on the story of Julius and Augustus shown mainly through the view point of two Roman soldiers. Has anyone else here watched the show? What is your opinion on it?

Good fictional dramatisations. But many inaccuracies in presentation of characters and some of the aesthetics...
Some of the scenes are just an excuse to add smut, others are almost certainly just pure inventions on the part of the authors. However, they do portray the political infighting and factional maneuvering in a good way, and give an insight into some of the motives of the protagonists of the drama.

Nevertheless, Roman cavalry did not wear stirrups, Cicero was NOT in the Senate when Caesar was assassinated, Pompey did not look like that, the woman Atia is portrayed with a great deal of poetic license being taken etc etc..
I'm impossible to watch the show with, because I annoy everybody by pointing out these inaccuracies, still, it's made for entertainment, and to somebody who has a less then average knowledge of the period it probably seems reasonably accurate...

Of course some things have been changed and some others have been for the purpose of dramatization. But I haven't seen any other show or movie that depicts the political situation of that time in such a detailed manner..

I loved this show, though not quite as much as Spartacus. Still though, definitely one of my all time favorites.
