Rock Discussion Thread

Postby The Holy Empire of the Spaghetti Monster » Wed Jan 04, 2017 10:28 pm

So, NS, there's a metal thread and a punk thread...but apparently a total absence where a rock discussion thread should be!

I know, right? It's like, how much more nonsensical can it get, and it's...none. None more nonsense.

Therefore, someone had to start one, and golly gee, it looks like it's going to be me.

REMEMBER, KEEP THINGS CIVIL, OR THE DEMON MODS WILL DESCEND.

So, to start the discussion...damn, 2016 has sucked when it comes to celebrity deaths, and rockers were hit just as hard. Which one was personally the saddest for you?
For me, it was definitely Bowie. The man was a goddamn genius...

I'm sure I missed someone, so if you think of someone, tell me and I'll put them in the poll.

It was similar for me. I don't think I'd ever heard a David Bowie song besides 'Space Oddity' before he died.

Afterwards, however, I learned more about him and realized just how sad it was to lose him.

Same story here. Now I love the Ziggy Stardust album and some other songs from Blackstar, Young Americans, and Heroes.

Elsewhere in Rock, I've been really digging Weezer lately. The 90s albums like Blue and Pinkerton especially, but also the newer stuff.

David Bowie's death, for me. I was a fan, but his catalogue is so vast that I was nonetheless unfamiliar with much of it.

THEY'RE GODDAMN MINERALS MAR- Oh, like the music.
I got into Rock when I was about 6 when my older sister introduced me to Antiflag. From there I ended up listening to a lot of the Meat Puppets, and the Screaming Females.

I have not heard of a single one of those bands, except for Meat Puppets.

I haven't heard much Weezer. What other bands are they most like?

They're 90s alternative rock, with shades of pop, punk or emo mixed in at times, depending on the song or album. They're known for starkly contrasting upbeat, catchy melodies with a geeky persona and self-deprecating, introspective lyrics. They don't really sound exactly like anyone else imo, but you'd probably like them if you enjoy bands such as Dookie-era Green Day, Pixies, Jimmy Eat World, Nirvana, Blink 182 or Sunny Day Real Estate, I guess. The first two Weezer albums are very influential and essentially perfect pop/rock albums.

Those are both from the first, self-titled album. Many good songs on it beyond those two big hit radio singles too. Holiday, The World Has Turned, Only In Dreams..... <3

The second album Pinkerton is a bit darker and noisier, if you're into that. Their newer material is more pop-oriented but still good. The last two albums in particular have been a comeback after a lackluster 00s.

I might listen to some Doobie Brothers, the Kinks, a couple Jefferson Airplane songs, some others. Jimi Hendrix, Rush, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers and stuff. Like what was said above, I didn't really look into David Bowie until after he died, and that was some great shit I'd been missing.

I also listen to 90s/early 2000s rock. The well-known songs you might expect to hear on the radio. Nirvana, some Stone Temple Pilots, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Soundgarden, Foo Fighters, on top of all the other great stuff, of which I really should remember who made those good songs. (Insert facepalm smiley here)

Some eighties stuff. Scorpions and such.

Led Zeppelin is automatic, isn't it? :p

A couple of their songs were just instrumentals. I believe it was with the song XYZ where Neil was able to do his thing in concerts. There's a reason why Jack Black gives a Rush album to the drummer to study in the movie School of Rock. :p

Song sounds like Aqualung mixed with Corrosion of Conformity!

RUSH!

Probably my favorite non-metal rock band ever. Legends.
