Not really, but I do want to expand Orthodoxy because it's my IRL religion, and I like making alternate histories where it is stronger than it was historically.

I'd be happy if I could spread Orthodoxy through the original borders of the historical Eastern Roman Empire and through the Napoleonic borders of the Russian Empire; however, I'd be even more thrilled if I could spread it through Justinian's Empire. That said, getting the spot with the most provinces in the ledger isn't a big priority, at least as much of one as just spreading it to specific borders.

Don't fight your fellow Orthodox. The Byzantines have a very ridiculous amount of flanks they can get attacked from, and once you are getting into Egypt (if you are somehow able to get that far using a non-custom or non-converted Byzantine start), four, five, and six front wars are very real possibilities if you make enemies of your neighbors. Definitely ally with Georgia, that protects the entire Caucuses. Even though I was successful in Southern Italy, I'd recommend putting it off even in a custom start. Keep Patriarch Authority high.

I tried this once; I didn't get very far, and it wasn't ironman, but allying Poland (and Hungary too, if you can) is probably the best way to win that all important first war. The Purple Phoenix DLC enables a few events and missions that give quite an edge, but it's a lot of money for content that works solely for one faction.

In all seriousness thats what I see people do when they do a Byzzie run. They ally Poland and Hungary then wait for the favors to get up enough that both will be called into war.
