To me it seems like the problem is the AI always leaves Soissons alone for the most part. In this playthrough they only got invaded a few decades ago.

Yep, Huskar is right, as if there doubt. It's a stressful thing to play a brand new game on its hardest difficulty. And that's why the Ottoman's are getting some love.
Funny thing, this is the first time I'm playing as the Ottos in this up to date build of the game, where Byzantium actually tries to defend itself by finding allies. It probably goes without saying that their attempt to survive was still a total failure.

In more than a few of my recent games the Byz has survived into the 16th or 17th centuries by allying Hungary and scaring off the Ottoderps for a while.
