First off, I should assure you that I'm just being a twat and not actually telling you how to play.

Secondly, I'll still answer that question because I seriously do value Defensive over Quality, most of the time. Stacking morale bonuses is seriously strong as France. Making yourself stronger where you're already strong means nothing but good and OP things. The combat abilities of Quality can't compare, not in France's situation. I also highly value the economic benefits (land maintenance and fort cost reductions) in Defensive, allowing yourself to support more armies earlier than if you'd go with Quality. An extra army on the field with its super-élan most certainly means more than combat abilities. And lastly, I believe that reinforce speed is one of the most underrated abilities in the entire game. Whenever suffering from combat, regardless of whether you win or lose it, being able to get your manpower into that army quicker means you can get into other fights quicker. That ability is so valuable to me. And the last of the strong ideas is taking less attrition on your armies. That one needs no explanation, it's just a good, solid perk to have. Quality just doesn't have enough going for it, especially on nations that don't synergize with it.

Alright, I've enough of these insults and libel! Protestantism "benefits", if you can even call them that are permanent, but minuscule. A mere fraction of the power that Reformed offers, in powerful bursts. You want to talk about French élan, I'll show you some of my own élan towards this drivel: To claim that Protestantism's 5% morale boost is worth something compared to Reformed's 15%, is facetious bordering on propaganda based upon petty things like actual beliefs systems and "honor". The Reformed burst can easily last long enough even for long, drawn-out wars so long as you time things right and use the ability when the built up power has reached its cap.

Going further, the Reformed economic benefits easily outstrip Protestantism's innate 10% taxes when building an empire with global desires. The trade power you can leverage with Reformed can make a noticeable effect when its 10% increases affect numbers going into the hundreds when being pulled in from trade from all around the world. A true French Empire stretching across the world would bathe in the money exploited by the Reformed faith.

Meanwhile, I need not make a case for the power Reformed (+1) diplomatic reputation and (-2) unrest reduction when dealing with vassals and conquest, respectively.

Only the Chinese tree is comparable when it comes to good, guided conquest choices. Haven't tried them yet, though.
