Military shit is hard when you can't just rely on levies and have to remember to build standing armies. Also I often forget to move my armies around before declaring war in the games where I can do that, since I'm just so used to having to mobilise after the DOW (aside from retinues and hordes in CK2). Also, I am really bad at economy stuff and long-term strategy in EU4.

Well, if you get big enough, retinues are vastly superior to levies. I have a screenshot floating around somewhere on my PC where I won a 12k vs 19k (I was the 12k) battle against the Byzzies. Then again, I can blame that on Heavy Cav and vassal holy orders...

Yeah, I make retinues when I remember, which is usually frequently enough. My problem is actually relying on that stuff completely -- even towards the late game, when I've built up my retinues, I still like being able to raise a duchy's worth of levy to take care of a revolt, or to just raise my border's levies to send into a small-scale war.
