Depends. Sometimes it dies, sometimes it blobs. Personally I'd join them then take over from the inside.

I don't want to play an HRE game, though, my vision is looking towards Scandinavia. Simply keeping the HRE off my back would suffice.

I assume I'll still have to be careful, but that's great to know that those simple rules should work out.

Personally, I like keeping myself allied to them (or at least getting a NAP) whenever I play in Western Europe. Not only does that keep them from bothering you, but when you're weaker, it enables you to take on somewhat stronger foes.

Since I've never obtained a single achievement on CK2 (mostly because all my games have been with modding or character customization) decided to see about playing a normal Iron Man as the earl of Northumbria. As Osulf, I gained over 900 gold and 1,600 prestige before dying, with my heir, who is economically savvy, saving more in preparation to overthrow Duke Asshole Morcar and obtain independence.

I have no idea why the King of Denmark and the Holy Roman Emperor have been letting me marry all sorts of my relatives into their family, since at the moment, we're a lowly bunch.

Me in CK2: *blobs over a continent*
Me in EU4: *takes one county, it revolts, I lose it; can't manage resources or afford advisors*
Me in Stellaris: *one of the weakest empires, can't win battles for shit*
Me in HoI3 and Vic2: "This shit is too complicated, I give up."

Military shit is hard when you can't just rely on levies and have to remember to build standing armies. Also I often forget to move my armies around before declaring war in the games where I can do that, since I'm just so used to having to mobilise after the DOW (aside from retinues and hordes in CK2). Also, I am really bad at economy stuff and long-term strategy in EU4.

Is it actually worth it to build trade post, militia quarters, and other things in CK2? It seems pretty costly and my levy decreased even after upgrading some military buildings.

Your personal levy will vary depending on your martial skills, temporary modifiers, and suchlike. That might be why it dropped.

Whether they're worth it depends, really. Do you have anything else to spend your money on? If not, you may as well upgrade your holdings. Just make sure you only build in counties you intend to keep.

Well, if you get big enough, retinues are vastly superior to levies. I have a screenshot floating around somewhere on my PC where I won a 12k vs 19k (I was the 12k) battle against the Byzzies. Then again, I can blame that on Heavy Cav and vassal holy orders...
