What is the most badass national anthem?

Postby Grand Vietnam » Sat Dec 24, 2016 3:32 pm

From Wikipedia: "A national anthem (also state anthem, national hymn, national song etc.) is generally a patriotic musical composition that evokes and eulogizes the history, traditions and struggles of its people, recognized either by a nation's government as the official national song, or by convention through use by the people. The majority of national anthems are either marches or hymns in style. The countries of Latin America tend towards more operatic pieces, while a handful of countries use a simple fanfare."

Let's look at national anthems in a new way: their badass level, anthems that inspire their nations' citizens to patriotism and rouses them up. Personally, I think the Vietnamese national anthem is the most badass. I'll let the lyrics explain themselves.

Soldiers of Vietnam, marching onward
United in determination to save the nation,
Our steps resound on the long and arduous road.
Our flag, reddened with the blood of victory, bears the spirit of the country.
The rumbling of distant gunfire joins in our marching song.
Our glorious path is built on the corpses of our foes.
Overcoming hardship, together we build our resistance bases.
For the People, let us fight ceaselessly,
Hasten to the battlefield!
Forward! All forward!
Vietnam is everlasting.

Soldiers of Vietnam, marching onward
The gold star afluttering
Leading our people and our land out of misery
Joining hands in our struggle to build a new life.
Rising in unison, smashing the chains and shackles to smithereens.
For too long have we swallowed our hatred.
Vow to sacrifice for a brighter life.
For the People, let us fight ceaselessly,
Hasten to the battlefield!
Forward! All forward!
Vietnam is everlasting.

Here, we have an entire song dedicated to soldiers fighting for their country, like it's La Marseillaise—which, I'll admit, is also pretty badass.

But that's my side. What about you, NSG? What do you think the most badass national anthem is? Do its lyrics or its arrangement give it a powerful feeling?

Include a link, if you can. I'm pretty sure we'd love to compare ours to yours.

Any anthem that promotes patriotism instantly sucks.

As far as music goes, I'd say the USSR anthem of 1944 onwards is the best.

The East German national anthem is pretty awesome.
MT nation composed of people from every nation with a current Antarctic base. NS stats somewhat apply (despite them being generally stupid). I would use my factbooks but I'm lazy and haven't gotten around to it yet.

Antarctica is a pretty "cool" place.
I'm not sorry

I think the USSR's was slightly more badass than Russia's is now
We're basically a republic, but my 2016 self decided to make an 'empire' so that's what we're stuck with. :/

National anthem of the Soviet Union.

"Militannia the Eternal"

Nations have risen and fallen like waves in the sea
Such a fate will never befall our mighty country
For the strength of our leader,
the strength of our people,
the strength of our military will NEVER falter
and will NEVER become like the calm sea!

Our Rise
Our Ascension
Our Conquest
Never questioned
For we are immortals!

To Militannia
the Eternal!

I so like God Save The Queen, but then again i'm British so I would say that.
If not, probably the national anthem of the USSR, or the Russian national anthem.
I also like the Japanese national anthem.

Any semblance of the old nation(s) no longer exists. This new nation is approximately 260 years after the last update to the former incarnation of this account. It was physically painful to delete all those factbooks....

La Marseillaise easily.

Arise, children of the Fatherland,
The day of glory has arrived!
Against us tyranny's
Bloody banner is raised, (repeat)
Do you hear, in the countryside,
The roar of those ferocious soldiers?
They're coming right into your arms
To cut the throats of your sons, your women!

To arms, citizens,
Form your battalions,
Let's march, let's march!
Let an impure blood
Soak our fields!

What does this horde of slaves,
Of traitors and conspiratorial kings want?
For whom are these vile chains,
These long-prepared irons? (repeat)
Frenchmen, for us, ah! What outrage
What fury it must arouse!
It is us they dare plan
To return to the old slavery!

I wonder why in Google when I type national anthem, the Indian one comes up in search. It could be because of the population of the Indian internet.

BTW, the Soviet/Russian anthem. It has the ability to rally people in battle that few anthems did.

You really have to read and hear the lyrics in French; the translation factor does its poetry a disservice.

The Internationale is superior. Though La Marseillaise easily a close second place.
