Fallout 4 Railroad Morality Discussion (SPOILERS)

Postby Dernland » Thu Dec 22, 2016 8:21 pm

--MAJOR UNMARKED SPOILERS--
--YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED--

Alright boys and girls, put on your lab coats and pop some mentats 'cause we're gonna have some intelligent conversation.

Something about the Railroad always bugged me. It wasn't the self righteous behavior, the militant freeing of synths, or the fact their password was essentially password. No, what bugged me was the fact that they proclaimed synths to be people, but didn't really treat them like people. They're nice to them, and they have synths among their own ranks, but look at what they do to synths. They take a synth, who at this point has a real personality and mind of its own, wipe said mind and give them a whole new personality, past, and face. They claim that this is for the synth's protection, and that they need to hide from the Institute, but is this really freeing the person? They're essentially clearing a hard drive and installing a new operating system, the machine is the same but the person is completely different.

From my point of view they are killing the free thinking synth and replacing them with somebody else. Freeing the machine but killing the soul. Whoever Danse was before the Railroad made him Danse is dead, deleted, disassembled. Same goes for any 'freed' synth. They are pretty much proving the Institute's point. That when you get down to it, synths really are just machines, no matter how human they seem.

Your thoughts? Do you agree, do you disagree?

The Fallout series never went for a particularly realistic depiction of science and technology. Nuclear fallout somehow gives you immortality for God's sake. They also were pretty bad at actually going into any real detail about explaining and justifying the factions' beliefs in that game. The entire justification for the Institute using synths rather than conventional robots in the first place is really convoluted. It was a fun Blade Runner simulation, but if you're actually looking for a fully coherent plot line you're going to have some difficulty finding it in that game.
