It's pretty difficult in Morrowind unless you do, like, really good skill allocating, but it's possible. I used to go pure mage a lot in Oblivion. Thank for "Enemies Explode".

What would be a good set up for a vampire character in Skyrim? Ive honestly never given one a proper go, as im usually too busy murdering them horribly with a sword. So race, key skills etc?

I was also thinking of maybe going down the route of vampire/archer but not sure at the moment.

The Thalmor can destroy Skyrim, because the province of Skyrim is useless anyway. It has a backwater society- worshiping false gods. Talos, a man, is a god? Pure heresy!

I was playing a Pure Mage in my last game. It was fun up to the point where I became a little disenchanted with just how overpowered I became with 0 cost Destruction spells. Even cranking up the difficulty didn't change anything.

I'm of the opinion that being a vampire is good for any setup, considering I've become a vampire in pretty much every game since Dawnguard came out. Although, to answer your question a little more properly, Vampire abilities synergize well with sneaky skills and Illusion magic. Vampires make for perfect assassins, no matter what sort of weapon you kill with. Also, a Dunmer can offset the 50% malus to fire resistance naturally. Dunmer have great potential to become Magi-ssassin. When playing some of the Dark Brotherhood quests in my last game, Quiet Casting in the Illusion tree made me capable of launching major Destruction spells at my targets and remain relatively stealthy. Vampires are pretty reasonably flexible, it's all about the style that you want to commit to, really.
