Windhelm's layout is shit, I agree. Markarth's is weird, too. Neither of them feel like proper city layouts to me.

But I like the oppressive, authoritarian, brutalist aesthetic of Windhelm in that I think it fits well with Ulfric and the Stormcloaks as the borderline Fascists they are. Plus, it is an oppressive place. Just ask the Dunmer and Argonians.

I never preorder. Ever. I wouldn't preorder a game even if it had the approval stamp of Jesus Christ Himself.

I always thought Markarth had a beautiful layout and loved the Dwemer architecture in the interiors. I wish the market was a little larger

Yeah I agree Markarth is lovely. It's got an almost alien feel and does the awkward layout right.

Markarth is kind of weird because it has a very.... fantasy cyberpunk feel to it. Like you hit all the societal notes with the very vertical construction, the paranoia and fear of being watched constantly. The silverbloods as a stand-in for corporations running the town.

Absolutely. Vlindrel hall in my view is the most beautiful house. I love the interior and the overall feel of it hence why I made it my primary home. I would occasionally stay in Breezehome. Its dark but it has a cozy vibe to it.

I actually think the house in Raven Rock from the Dragonborn expansion is the best one...

Markarth is alright. My main beef is it's absolutely dreadful colour palette. I wish they could have at least differentiated the buildings and rock more.

Riften is much more attractive, whereas Windhelm is much more interesting and makes a competent stab at having differentiated districts (unlike Windhelm's pretend districts). The Dark Elf quarter feels different to the stately homes of the Nord elite.

Even for a fantasy series I'm surprised Solitude doesn't get more notice.

It is a terrible idea to place a city on an arch in the middle of the ocean, structures which have a habit of eroding and breaking quicker than most other geologic structures.

To be fair it's possible they used Magic to fix that.

While I enjoy Riften and Honeyside, the only thing I dislike about Riften is that Brynjolf always walks up to you and tries to get you to be a thief even if your character isn't a thief, he still tries to recruit you.

The Skyrim settlements were disappointing in general. No less than 4 settlements with the same generic Nordic architecture copy-pasted! At least with Oblivion each settlement was architecturally distinct, while in Morrowind there were several varied architectural styles.

His attitude and “knowing how you got your coin” as if knowing you’re a thief at heart wasn’t a good choice to include IMO.

Oh, shit, are we talking about cities now?

My personal favorite is probably Morthal. Windhelm is also pretty good, too, but it's a bit too dark (lighting-wise) for my taste. I never liked Riften; always lagged for me.

Mortal is nice. I always loved how its built around and over a lake. Plus I love Jarl Ravencrone. She's the coolest Jarl in my view.

I prefer Jarl Ulfric for obvious reasons, but Igrod is a close second.

Yeah Balgruff is imo the best put I do think Ravencrone is close behind. And when I say Jarl I mean before starting the civil war, not if you side with the Imperials/Stormcloaks and who replaces said jarl in that hold. And speaking of which Skald, Korir and Ulfric are the worst, and ehh throw in Lalia Law Giver for being a milk drinker to Maven.

I always hated Skald. His demeanor turned me off the moment I met him. So much so that in Season Unending I traded The Pale for Markarth to get rid of him.

Assuming you can trade the Pale, I've had a number of times where it was Winterhold either way both Skald and Korir are bad jarls. Skald reminds me somewhat of Charles VI of France with his obsession of Talos to such a degree he thinks Ulfric is the second coming, and Korir just flat out hates all magic and elves in general and holds no trust in the college so much so he's propagandized his own son in his hatred and distrust of any and all elves and magic users.

Nah fam. Murdering traitors to every race of Man that sold their souls and their Towers to the Thalmor is way better.

I’ve never really bothered with the Civil War lately. I’ve had some characters join but never finish it. Perhaps I might finally join a side with my Breton Spellsword modded playthrough I’m planning.
