No love for Alaska (or Wyoming)

Postby Australian rePublic » Tue Nov 22, 2016 4:04 am

In reference to American television shows, how come there's never any based in Alaska? There's plenty in the contingous USA, and plenty in Hawaii, but none in Alaska. Even when there's a character from interstate, it's never Alaska? Reality TV- "we're travelling across the nation to help people with...", what about Alaska? You travel to Hawaii, HAWAII, (as they should) which is a hell of a lot further, why not Alaska? Why not Alaska? What do American television producers hate about their nation's largest state? (by size). Seriously, it's the largest state by size, I'm sure you can somewhere. Why do you hate Alaska? Is it too large? Is it cold? Why do you hate Alaska? Is nobody in Alaska in need of the services that these shows provide? If the Simpsons can write a movie based in Alaska, why can't anyone else? Why can't anyone else?

EDIT: Why not Wyoming? I mean Alaska is a far away freezer, what's wrong with Wyoming? What has Wyoming ever done to producers?

There are a bunch of shows taking place in Alaska. Alaska state troopers, Alaskan bush people, Alaska: The Last Frontier, Alaska proof, Wild West Alaska...

You know, come to think of it, most of Animal Planet's programming seems to be about Alaska now.

You see this? This is what Wyoming looks like. The whole thing. Other than Yellowstone, this is what you can see in Wyoming.

Coincidentally, this is also what most of Colorado looks like. My guess is that since Colorado is already more well-known than Wyoming, writers prefer to just set stuff in Colorado instead.

Edit: My dad just reminded me that Close Encounters was set in Wyoming, so there's at least one thing.

So we have two catagories. "What we can shove the name Alaska on" and "Avoid Alaska"?

I can think of a couple.

Deadliest Catch, about Alaskan deep sea fishing
Ice Road Truckers, about exactly what is says on the tin
Alone in the Wilderness, about surviving alone in Alaska(really good)
Bob Ross used to talk about living in Alaska a lot in his show as well.

And I'm sure nature and animal planet each do a documentary there at least once a year.

"Why" has a pronounced "h." There is no "h" in Wyoming, so it does not go "why-oh-ming." It's "wie-oh-ming" with the first part rhyming with "tie."

Granted, you do have to listen hard to catch the difference, but there certainly is one, and people like me will pick it up and have our ears grate if a phantom extra letter is being added.

Here in Spain, Wyoming has become increasingly famous for a comedian whose nickname is the "Great Wyoming", and featured the state in a couple episodes of "el Intermedio".

There's plenty of shows in Alaska, of course a lot of them are based around surviving in the wilderness and such but there's ones about gold mining, fishing, and all sortsa things.

Wyoming is known for Yellowstone. That's it. Its where alot of documentaries and nature shows are because its the Alaska of the contiguous states.

Else when's the last time you heard of a show in Idaho or Utah or Minnesota or anyplace like that.
