Man, that song is so addicting. Check out the music video for their new single "Dance" if you dig this one.

As a whole, though, Tales of the Sands is by their best, most progressive and most epic album. Unfortunately, they've turned into a little bit of a "singles band" since then.

Honestly the only song I ever really liked from Tales of the Sands was the single, and maybe a couple of others.

Went to my first metal festival this weekend: ProgPower USA XX in Atlanta.

Twas a stellar experience, especially hearing my man Hansi again with Demons & Wixards. Will definitely be back next year for PPUSA XXI to see bands like Ihsahn, The Gathering and Rhapsody.

Not been in here for a while; albums I've got recently:

"Renaissance" - Utsu-P (Vocaloid/Djent/Metalcore) - 7/10. The guy's never going to top his early work, but more of that t h i c c guitar tone is always welcome
"Chaos and Beauty" - Foredoomed (Melodic Death/Power Metal/Progressive Metal) - 7/10. Some smooth clean vocals, interesting vaguely proggy musical detours and enough melodeath left in to keep it sharp.
"Solipsis" - Xaon (Symphonic Melodic Death Metal) - 8/10. This doesn't go all out for speed or virtuosity like some other bands who've introduced symphonic influences into DM (and left me completely cold with a wall of too much going on at once), here the key's in the groove and it works.
Meteahnă timpurilor - Sur Austru (Atmospheric Black Metal/Folk Metal). 9/10. Put flute in BM and I'm immediately sold. Add in some ominous chanting and epic build-ups and you've got an album that'll be somewhere on my end of year list.
Are these "human rights" in the room with us right now?

Clandestine is also a Stockholm death metal monument. Personally I like the third album Wolverine Blues as well, but opinions about that title are varied to say the least.

...WAIT, IRON SAVIOR PUT OUT AN ALBUM THIS YEAR!? DAMN IT, I GOTTA START KEEPING UP WITH METAL NEWS BETTER!

EDIT: Big shocker, it was awesome...except for "Until We Meet Again". A rare clunker of a song. But hey, 9 out of 10 being rocking isn't too shabby.

...and I can't comprehend why! Wolverine Blues rocks harder than pretty much any album I know. The whole "Death 'n Roll" thing begins and ends with that album for me.

As fun as it is, I can't deny that songs like "Left Hand Path" are on another level of musical brilliance though

Unfortunately Entombed, or Entombed A.D. as they are called these days thanks to petty legal shenanigans, has never been able to play those brilliant songs from the first two albums the way they are supposed to be played. Other bands such as Unleashed, Grave, Dismember and Entrails, to name some other Stockholm death metal beasts, always have been the better musicians live on stage.

Oof. Apparently Iron Savior did another album I missed. A remaster of stuff from Iron Savior to Battering Ram...and they kinda dropped the ball on this one. Like the remaster of Condition Red is nowhere as baller as the original. And they really softened up Battering Ram when you compare it to the original. Weak.

Nice. I hope to one day own Darkthrone's entire "unholy trinity". At the moment I only have Transilvanian Hunger (along with Panzerfaust), even though I actually vastly prefer both A Blaze In The Northern Sky and Under a Funeral Moon.

My first and only Darkthrone album for years was Soulside Journey. Back then Darkthrone's name was still spelled as "Dark Throne".

Had a good haul at the last festival I visited. Got myself albums from Nails, Drainland, Acephalix, Like Rats, Xibalba, Kohti Tuhoa, Lair Of The Minotaur, Baptists, Sarabante and Of Feather And Bone. The Southern Lord record label had a stand, they sold some of their surplus older titles for a very nice price.

Check them out on YouTube, perhaps you like their barbaric eighties-style war metal. Their sound is somewhere between raw heavy metal, early death metal and doom.
