That's an impressive array of favorites for having only been listening to metal for 8 months. What started you on your journey?

I respect Soviet because he's generally a cool dude with good taste in music aside from thinking he's too cool for all power metal :p

That said, anyone who calls Blind Guardian generic tripe will at least get a virtual dirty look from me...

For what it's worth, Blind Guardian and Iced Earth are probably among the power metal bands I can tolerate in small doses. Kinda like DaBaby.

Reach, if you're incapable of respecting someone based on them appreciating music you don't, that says more about you than anything else. I hope someday when you look in the mirror there's someone who can be respected looking back at you. Satan gets all the blame, yet the dominant world religions would be less than nothing without this dauntless Ancient Adversary who has been around as a mythical figure well before monotheism stumbled into existence.

So the evangelical statement of Satan playing his biggest trick on humanity by convincing everyone he doesn't exist is pretty much seen as an act of betrayal by all the high-ranking clergy, because that wasn't the deal. That wasn't the deal at all!

Yeah pretty much.

Seriously, even if Satan were real, it wouldn't mean God was real. I consider the Bible to be one-sided. I want Satan's side of the story!

That's true.

I remember the first time I heard death metal, and I think it was Morbid Angel's Altars of Madness. My head felt like it was swarming with hornets but in a good way.

That's the feeling when you discover something new and there's a mental click immediately. I had about the same experience when I heard Napalm Death for the first time on the radio back in the early nineties, it was the song Pride Assassin.

Sort of a tangent, but related.

Do you remember any bands that the first time you heard they were 'too much' but later everything just clicked?

When I first heard grindcore around 13-14, it was just like immediate sensory overload. When I rediscovered it around 17 or so it just clicked, Pig Destroyer, Benumb, Brutal Truth, etc was just perfect. I sometimes regret that there isn't a genre of music out there that will do that for me anymore. The last album that did was Merzbow's Pulse Demon. There's still stuff that I really enjoy, but no matter how absorbed I get by The Weathermen, it's not likely to grab me and refuse to let go by filling my entire ability to focus like 'borderline sensory over-stimulation' genres do.

First time I listened to Immortal's Pure Holocaust in a record store (or was it Battles In The North?), I found it difficult to wrap my mind around it. Thrash, grindcore and death metal had not prepared me for this grim and frostbitten experience! Fortunately I learned to love it, which is why I have a bunch of Immortal's albums in my music collection.

First times hearing Ulver's Bergtatt, I just thought it sounded staid and long-winded and quite boring. This was just on the back of discovering some of the first black metal I liked in Dimmu Borgir, Dissection, and Immortal. I wasn't ready for the whole atmospheric/hypnotic/introspective/soul-searching side of metal. In a year or two, after my mind had been expanded more by the patience required of Agalloch and shoegaze and Doom Metal, I came back to Bergtatt and it was like listening to a completely different album. Now it's in my Top 5 All Time.

Now that's quite the veteran band you're mentioning there. Many of the more recently established bands tend to recycle without actually adding something of their own to their music, so calling those acts generic is not entirely reasonable.

Literally none of that is true.

Stop pretending to know anything about a genre you clearly don't listen to.

I consider myself more in the Center, really. Or at least Center-Right rather than full-blown Right-wing but whatever.

Care to provide an example of me bootlicking unironically? Because I can't think of any so it seems like this is just a generic "no u" which isn't much of a comeback. C'mon, Naz. You can do better than that - I believe in you!

Since I know this thread loves to talk about Sabaton, I was listening to Bismarck again today and loving. Quite the fun, spirited track.

...Then, just now, I decided to listen to "Sign of the Cross" by Iron Maiden since I'm seeing them tonight...

Does anyone else think the main melody that repeats throughout Bismarck is remarkably similar to this one that first plays at 2:11?

The whole Satan thing is only really there for shock value, and even though black metal is an entire sub-genre dedicated to it, it mostly discusses paganism & retreating into the forest. Also, a lot of metal bands - Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, even fucking Slayer - have Christian members in them who use the idea of Satan and temptation to force us to confront our own humanity. Honestly, most of Slayer's output is about how evil is awful; it's just through the POV of the bad guy, a la Angel of Death.

Some bands just use Satan as a symbol/Satanic themes because it makes Fundies mad.
