Have you listened to ColdWorld, Selvans, Wolves In The Throne Room, Profundum, or Skyforest? Not all exactly along the same lines as Severoth, but all really good atmospheric/hypnotic stuff that I've been digging. Maybe one of these will strike your fancy.

I'm digging that Severoth album btw.

I know ColdWorld. Used to listen regularly, but haven't gone back since the second album fell below my expectations. Wolves in The Throne Room I can remember not really "getting", but I should give them a second listen as I think it might have partly been the fault of overhyping. Will check the others.

Limbonic Art might be suitable for you as well, then. Personally I'm quite fond of the albums Ad Noctum - Dynasty Of Death and The Ultimate Death Worship.

I'm still struggling to put my finger on just what the defining factor is that separates stuff like some of what people have recommended me here that I've thought pretty neat, and the extra level of stuff that immediately makes me go "buy buy buy" like the two albums I mentioned earlier and this that I've just come across.

EDIT: Also I've just re-listened to Coldworld's Autumn for the first time since it came out, and I've no idea at all why I thought it was shit, it's really good.

This is probably my favorite album by a modern thrash band of the last couple years, actually. Not that that's saying all that much lol, but still. Recommended listen for fans of old school Kreator, Coroner, Sepultura, etc.

Early Sepultura tends to be darker, but Critical Defiance does mix various eighties influences rather well. Most of that track seems to be instrumental, which explains the high percentage of 'riffage', to use your term.

You don't earn the title Thrash Eater by letting slow generic riffs win you over. Old Kreator had real speed and riffs. Also return your metal card for comparing Coroner to THAT.

Not sure what this is in reference to, but when you only really listen to one or two subgenres, then yeah, that makes it unlikely you'll appreciate most of what is posted in an all-encompassing metal genre thread.

One or two? I listen to a lot more than that.

Folk, Power, Traditional, Symphonic, Thrash, Glam (if you count that), Alternative, Gothic, Grunge (if you count that), Speed, some NDH, some Metalcore, Progressive, Post-Metal (if you count that), very rarely Nu (most of it's hot garbage but there are occasional gems I find), Neoclassical, Industrial, Funk (if you count that), the occasional Christian and Rap (if you count that), etc. I even heard a Babymetal song I liked not long ago.

Thing is Power is my favorite and go-to first and foremost, whereas everybody else here seems to fawn all over Black and Death (both of which I just can't get into). I assure you my tastes are quite broad otherwise. That song you just linked that Naz called "weak", for example, I think is fucking awesome.

As for the reference, I asked for some patriotic ('Murican) metal on the 4th to celebrate Independence Day as any Metalhead should celebrate anything: headbangin'

Naz was the only one who responded, who just threw some shitty black metal Soviet Red Army propaganda crap ("Great Patriotic War") at me - ruining my day and my faith in this thread in the process. Probably had a good laugh about it, too.

Damn Commies; 12/8/1991 best day of life; Better Dead Than Red

Fair enough, I guess I just had you pinned as the power/symphonic/heavy metal guy in my head :p

I’m slightly surprised you liked that Critical Defiance song since they border on death/thrash territory at times. *epiphany* Maybe that’s your gateway to acclimating to death metal.... listen to any early kreator, sodom, early Slayer, Sepultura, morbid saint, necrophagist? The line between thrash and death can get very very blurry.

Is it? The first section has a methodical deliberate pace, I suppose, yeah. I guess that’s why it contrasts nicely in the context of the album. The song definitely speeds up in other sections though, in between the anthemic Maidenesque bits

Are the other two a little more to your satisfaction out of curiosity?

The line between thrash and death can get very very blurry.

I've already linked Kreator's Warrior Heart here before, and someone earlier linked Testament's Native Blood - both of which I love. Granted I don't look at Thrash much often, but there's probably more out there I'll like.

And I am the Power/Symphonic/Heavy Metal guy. As I said: those are my go-to genres. ;)
