I'd rather stay as far away from Liturgy as I possibly can
True that. I'll just show her some music.

Best way to "explain" a genre is by playing a song from a said genre.

Pelican and Long Distance Calling are solid choices when it comes to looking for representative post metal songs to play. Those two bands really succeeded in creating a more metallic interpretation of post rock.

Post metal is kind of not really a genre, anyway. It is pretty much sludge metal with post-rock influences. May as well be atmospheric sludge metal.

There is overlap between both genres, true. Mind you, Long Distance Calling is pretty much 'correct' post-rock played in a more metallic way, whereas bands such as Isis and Pelican do have a more prominent sludge element in their sound. But what about post-rocking black metal acts such as Wolves In The Throne Room, Hope Drone and Deafheaven?

Pretty sure, besides the one I don't know, those are all atmospheric black metal.

I try, but every time I do, there's always /something/ that bothers me about non-metal, and I can't quite pick out what it is.
