Shush. NSBM belongs in the dustbin of history. If you want to be edgy with your music then drunk New Yorkers will do.

I beg thy forgiving? Most NSBM is absolutely shit, yes. But above I gave some examples for some amazing NSBM... which is amazing precisely because it does black metal intelligently, and avoids making the mistakes of the hordes of shitty NSBm bands.

When you consider Dimmu Borgir and Behemoth to be subpar, you clearly haven't even been listening to them and are just parroting the usual losers who pretend to be in the know when it comes to so-called true black metal. That kind of behaviour was already old hat in the late twentieth century, but leave it to select members of the internet generation to revive said shitty attitude ad infinitum, but now embellished with casually racist edgelord memes for maximum agitation power.

Apologies for having an aversion to certain music and forming hyperboles to show my displeasure with said music to propagate humour. Furthermore, where have you encountered this "casual racism"?

Or just don't be a music snob and respect that some people find bands subpar? Get over yourself.

It's not the personal preferences per se, but the context in which they are presented.

There are three different rivers that will guide you to the heart of metal.
Each is unique. The people who got into metal from one river tend to dislike the music taste of the other two rivers.

River 1: melodic metalcore. So, your girlfriend broke up with you, you're in high school, and MCR just isn't doing enough for you anymore. You accidentally clicked on a Killswitch Engage video, and oh crap, you thought it was weird at first but you're starting to enjoy As Daylight Dies, so you listen to the whole album, and oh damn! It's nice music.
From there, you branch out into deathcore, maybe you'll enjoy some early BMTH or, if your soul is brave enough at this stage, you find enjoyment out of Thy Art Is Murder's catchier songs like No Absolution, Holy War, or even the emotional They Will Know Another. Then you find death metal, maybe branch out into grindcore, slam, the journey is yours.

River 2: Metallica sounds good. Time to branch out. Oh hai, Pantera. (one hour later) You drunkenly walk out of your house and yell WALK ON HOME, BOY! at the teenagers smoking pot on your driveway. Then you buy a metal vest, as many Megadeth and Slayer patches as you can afford, and post photos of them on your Instagram account. Congratulations, you wish you were born in a different generation, and everyone is calling you out for it.

River 3: The first Korn album, the first Slipknot album, Marilyn Manson, and Rob Zombie.

Granted, there are other smaller rivers, and while someone may have absolutely LOVED Transilvanian Hunger the first time they listened to it, that's not common.

Meanwhile I jumped pretty much straight into thrash, death metal, industrial and grindcore in the early nineties, around the time Nirvana brought an end to the hair metal craze with Smells Like Teen Spirit.

But duuuude, that's just like your opinion man...

I would agree that Prodigal Son is the worst song off of Killers, but it's still cool, if a bit long.

That's how it works. Personal attacks always do the trick. Reminds me of some of the lurid gossiping found in Lords of Chaos, the sensationalist book about black metal

Best way to explain what post metal is to my girlfriend? Should I just show her? We were listening to Ashes Against the Grain by Agalloch yesterday and I mentioned the genre's influence on the album, and it confused her.
