That's not exactly a lot of albums. Bit of a monoculture, if you ask me. Not that you were asking, of course.

I'd agree with you but you think Sabaton is mediocre anyway so I really have to call into question your idea of what constitutes "mediocrity".

Sabaton is definitely mediocre, if that's what you're asking.

It's not exactly a band with room for innovation in their sound, given how said sound has been defined decades ago by the British originators of the genre. Stagnation was therefore inevitable.

An incorrect answer to an unasked question. Astounding. The human race is marvelous.

From the standpoint of musical innovation and the diversity and complexity of their songwriting, sure, Sabaton is pretty basic. That said, I wouldn't call them mediocre. That's not the same thing. Many bands have tried simple, catchy power metal with lyrics about history, mythology and such, but very few have managed to grip as many people as as Sabaton and there is a reason for that. They're extremely and perhaps unprecedentedly effective and charismatic in delivering that formula.

TL;DR - Although Sabaton might be mediocre creatively, they are absolutely top-notch performers and entertainers.

I think I'd find it difficult to come up with a Top 10 this year. Plenty of albums were good but I've mostly been listening to older favourites of late to the point where I'd have to do a lot of revisiting and diverting myself from what I actually want to listen to in order to come up with an informed list.

Most albums I buy tend to be older ones as well, either from a few years or a few decades ago.

New Dyscordia. Ah, I missed this when the video was released but album came out this week, so if you tilt your head and look at it sideways I'm not really behind. Guitars and vocals are very satisfying, nice chunky sound. Noice.

YeahI like the nice thick-sounding guitars. Is that a keyboard doing the synthy stuff? I like that whatever it is.

Obligatory fangirl mention of another Pyogenesis track released in advance of the new album.

This one features Chris Harms from Lord of The Lost (another band I like so personal taste points fulfilled) so unsurprisingly it leans towards the more gothic metal side of things. Two weeks to the album drops, don't disappoint my hype.

Looking through some YouTube channels that I'm subscribed to and found a pretty good album from last year. Vivacity by Per Aspera, a one-man blackgaze/post-black project from Croatia. I'm biased towards this particular style, and it seems very well produced for a one-man project. Vocals mostly in the shrieked style but there's some occasional lower-end bellows too which throw in some nice contrast and momentarily give a bit of a dm feel. I can see why it's been given the blackgaze/post genre labelling but it's got more of a foot in traditional bm than many of the gazey and post projects you come across. If you're at all into this sort of thing, it's a pretty good example. Album is "name your price" on bandcamp.

I'm not joking

Somehow I feel like its something Dumb Ideologies would like.

Weirdly its not that surprising for her to go a bit metal. She's experimented with it on recent stuff. Poppy has always been a strange project. I mean she also has an industrial song about human's being enslaved for food like cattle

So Sabaton did a song with Apocalyptica.

Thoughts? I think it's easily better than most of the songs on The Great War. The sound reminds me a lot of their older stuff at certain points in the song, too.

What strikes me more than anything after a few listens of the album is that for all the weird genre shifts it's much more of an "album" than we typically get these days. Tied together by a common theme, last track references and reprises some of the parts of earlier song etc.
