At last I found the elusive, yet glorious, Byzantine Metal!

Well, close enough anyway.

It's good I guess. If it wasn't for the Candlemass logo slapped on the cover it'd be pretty forgettable
Thankfully the best song on the album "House of Doom" saves the album from being relegated to the pile of unnoteworthy doom metal. Which is funny because House of Doom sounds like modern Judas Priest wrote a Black Sabbath tribute song. Seriously the riffs and solo are Priest as hell, and don't tell me you couldn't imagine Halford singing this one.

Yet another Candlemass release that fails to even approach the grand masterpiece quality of Nightfall.

Great new songs I just discovered (new to me, anyway):

This song was practically made for end credits music. Like, it'd be absolutely perfect in such a role. This isn't even up for debate.

And now for a love song that doesn't suck ass. Literally, unironically, a better love story than Twilight (not that that's a hard thing to accomplish). I also legit thought there was a female vocalist in this song before watching this video. Reminds me of the 80s.

Had no idea this was a cover until now. Oh, and I'm just going to say right now: "RA- RA- RASPUTIN; RUSSIA'S GREATEST LOVE MACHINE" is the greatest lyrical composition in music history. Deal with it.

Anyway, let's talk about band names: I honestly want to know where Edguy got their name from. Also, I know "Helloween" is supposed to be a contraction of "Hell" and "Halloween" but honestly whenever I seen it I just see "Hello-ween"; which sounds like something one of those "Howdy Neighbor!" Suburban White Dad™-types would say. "Hello-ween, neighbor! Ah ha ha ha ha!"

I'd also like to know why Spotify keeps trying to feed me Amon Amarth when I'm listening to bands like Sabaton, Powerwolf, and Nightwish. Seems a bit out-of-place, IMO.

The most overrated song on that album (imo ofc). And when factoring in the new album from that band, that's the most overrated song from that band! I like the title track (Beast in Black), The Fifth Angel and Crazy, Mad, Insane a lot more than that. And their 2019 album From Hell With Love is far better than the debut, highlights being Die by the Blade, Unlimited Sin and True Believer. That "female vocalist" remark is also very very true for Die by the Blade, I honestly thought it had a female vocalist at first.

I always saw Helloween more like "Hell-o-ween". One of my favorite power metal bands btw.

That's because they are equally "poppy". I mean, if you replaced the growl singing with the cleaner tone of Sabaton or Powerwolf, they are basically a similar band. Sabaton's cover of Twilight of the Thunder God proves the point. It's pretty much identical except with clean vocals and a bit cleaner guitar sound!

Beast in Black (the song) is pretty badass, yeah. Crazy, Mad, Insane was pretty good too.

Helloween is pretty cool; just can't help but chuckle at the name.

Tbh, when I first heard Sabaton's cover I legit thought it was Amon Amarth because I had just skipped the original version of the song like 2-3 songs before Sabaton's cover popped up and my actual first thought was "Wait, didn't I just skip this song?" It's easily recognizable, and maybe I'll even give it an actual listen one day, but not when I'm on my daily power metal binge at work. That's when I need to jam to increase my productivity and, try as I might, I just can't jam to growling or shrieking. It upset my flow too much. I mean, I kinda like Amon Amarth in spite of their growling, but I just can't jam to a dude whose croaking like a frog or howling like a banshee.

Hard to argue, that song will always get your blood pumping!

My personal favorite might be their ballad "Master of the Wind" though.

I kinda like Amon Amarth in spite of their growling, but I just can't jam to a dude whose croaking like a frog or howling like a banshee.

I think you mean "roaring like a viking" :p

Not everyone is blessed with the capacities to appreciate the blistering vocals so common in the more ferocious subgenres of metal and hardcore.

I'm a sucker for stuff that has blasty growly bits but also has big build-ups to get there or wanders off into prettier waters. Tend to get bored by albums with only a single vocal style.

You're not truly metal until you hear the beauty in tortured, dying screams :ugeek:
(But seriously, there's a certain majesty to the harsh vocals of bands like Dissection or Agalloch.)

Better yet, ease yourself into it by listening to bands like Scar Symmetry that have both "beautiful" vocals and growls side-by-side
