My top four in some order is a vocaloid metalcore album, the VOLA album that took out most of the metal, a Bleeding Through album of all things, and the Sigh album that everyone else says isn't Sigh enough.

I might need to have my rating privileges withdrawn.

Most opinions about the latest Sigh album in this thread were pretty positive, though.

Yeah. It's worrying when you have to come to NS for the sensible opinions.

DI's top ten metal and metal-adjacent albums of 2018

Honourable mentions

"Father's Masturbation" - 十四代目トイレの花子さん

Would easily have made the top 10 if it were actually a formally released album rather than a compilation of new and old tracks that was released at a few live events in the West. Jpop/idol/grindcore. This is one of the songs that appears on it.

"Greatest Shits" - Utsu-P (鬱P)

Compilation and remastering of some top-tier vocaloid metal works. Full album.

The Proper List

10) "The Return" - Mongol

Badass Mongol-themed folk metal. Full album

9) "Ancient Geometry" - Vexes

Remember Deftones? Yeah, like that, only better. One of my favourite tracks

8 "exFallen" - ゆくえしれずつれづれ (Not Secured,Loose Ends)

Screamo-flavoured j-pop/idol that sounds much better than that description would suggest. One of my faves

7) "A Complex of Cages" - Barren Earth

Progressive extreme metal elevated by some tasty cleans and instrumental work. Full album

6) "Geometria" - Thy Catafalque

Finds a weird hypnotic groove that's maintained as the album moves between black metal, folk and electronica. Full album

5) "Oasis" - Sul Ad Astral

"Blackgaze" doesn't really do as a descriptor anymore. Can hear some atmospheric black, prog-death, and even metalcore and indie influences in this. Big step up from previous work. Full album

4) "Love Will Kill All" - Bleeding Through

Big surprise. Their previous stuff doesn't do it for me at all. But the combo of improved cleans and that key work hits a spot that allows the occasional silly lyricism to be glossed over. Some of the stuff lower down the list is probably of greater artistic merit, but this has been getting a lot of spins.Best track

3) "Heir To Despair" - Sigh

As weird as ever, but improved focus and use of a wider range of instrumentation puts this high-up in a pretty damn strong discography. One of my fave tracks.

2) "YAMINABE" - Annyaho

Catchy, addictive vocaloid metalcore that perfectly finds the sweetspot between the heavy and the melodic. One of my faves

1) "Applause of a Distant Crowd" - VOLA

Yeah, so it's less metal than the previous album, but it's a damn fine progressive album with a great vocal performance and piano earworms that you'll never free yourself from. Flawless. Full album

Top 10 of 2018

If you want the metal only version, remove Leather Teeth and add Azaghal's Valo pohjoisesta under Storm the Gates.

Metal album of the year is Sahon's Chanting for the Fallen, probably the best description I've come up for it is "Korean Vader".

Listening to last years Summoning album, something really does feel lacking in it and I don't know why. Maybe the novelty of me liking the concept so much has worn off, but I still seem to like quite a few of their albums. I'm just not feeling the newest.

This is unfortunate. Batushka is really one of the only metal bands I listen to with any regularity at this point. :\

Here's hoping we can get a second album, with proper respect to the original artist(s), etc. etc.

I never paid much attention to the whole anonymity shtick thing (if that's what you're referring to), but it does suck for them that they had to reveal themselves this way. I've often thought about making music under a different name (not for publicity purposes, just because I don't want my name inseparably attached to certain things), and I'd be pissed off if I were in their position.

I agree that it lacks the magic of their best works. Only the title track really draws me into the thick Summoning atmosphere I'm used to.

A photographer at one of their shows took a picture of the vocalist (whose name I don't remember). She reposted it on her Instagram, leaving the watermark intact. Then, the clothing company that had designed her outfit reposted the pic to their Instagram, which the original photographer interpreted as being used to promote a product without compensation (which is pretty much what happened). He sent an e-mail to the company asking them to either pay him for its usage or to make a donation of a smaller amount to a cancer charity based in the Netherlands (where the photographer was from). At this point, Angela Gossow (who is now AE's manager) got involved, basically shot down the photographer and accused him of extortion, implied that photographers should not expect compensation for their work, and this whole shitstorm erupted.

AE is pretty much digging their own grave and ignoring literally everyone.

Ohhhhhhh, that's fair. I've always been really into Orthodoxy-inspired music, so it strikes a chord with me. That's understandable, though.

You'd think self stated Anarchist Angela Gossow wouldn't give a fuck. Instead someone who was previously thought of as one of the more mature death metal vocalists has become the biggest baby and joke in the business.

Arch Enemy should mail physical copies of their next album to anyone who requests one. Imagine the money they'd make from the expo$ure.
