That tended to be my criteria as well, and the main reason I chose fire types most of the time. Gen 1 didn't have many good water types.

Yeah, it really didn't, aside from Blastoise, Polywhirl, and Gyarodos.

Gyarados was shit until Gen IV fixed it, and Poliwrath has always been painfully mediocre. Also, you forgot to mention Lapras, a.k.a. the best Gen I water type.

I'm talking about children, not manchildren (even if that is appropriate, too). The primary demographic for Pokémon has and will always be kids. We may still like it, but we are not the audience they care about.
