General Comic/Graphic Novel/Manga discussion thread

Postby Philjia » Mon Sep 26, 2016 4:47 am

This is a thread for discussing comics and graphic novels of all kinds; what you've been reading, want to read, your favourite writers and artists, and so on.

I've had a general interest in comics for a while, but in the past year or so my close friends and I have really gotten into the indie comics scene and we've read some pretty weird and wonderful stuff. In particular, Saga by Brian K Vaughan and Fiona Staples was the first comic I ever bought. Fuck me, it's brilliant. It's an amazing science fantasy adventure with everything you could want out of a story; comedy, tragedy, romance, excitement, drama, it's all here, topped out with a generous helping of hardcore sex and violence. It's Star Wars meets Game of Thrones on acid. Fiona Staple's beautiful ink-work gives every panel a vibrancy that makes the images almost pop off the page. Just don't read it in public. Some of the images may be difficult to explain if you get noticed.

SAGA was exactly the title that came into my mind when I saw the thread title. 8)

If you like SAGA, I can recommend "Y: The Last Man", also written by Brian Vaughan.

Other comic/manga series I'm currently reading are "The Walking Dead", "Attack on Titan", "Blacksad" and "Descender". I recently finished "XIII" and "Snowpiercer" and still plan to read "Preacher".

In general, I enjoy Franco-Belgian comics ("Spirou Fantasio", "Lucky Luke" etc), Graphic Novels and manga.
I don't really like DC and Marvel superhero comics.

I read the first book of Y: The Last Man. It was alright, but it's low on the list of things I want to follow up. Paper Girls, however, is really good. I've also read the first book of Southern Bastards, the first two compendiums of The Walking Dead, the first two volumes of Lumberjanes, the first volume of Bitch Planet, and the complete Scott Pilgrim Vs The World.

Hmm... As much as I like comics, I haven't read a lot of them.

There this one comic I'm trying to think of... what it name...

While I'm thinking of that, I know Bones is a good comic.

Saga's really good, I'm waiting for the next deluxe hardcover omnibus to come out, though. Currently about to finish Brian K. Vaughan and Marcos Martin's Doctor Strange arc "The Oath," incidentally

My favourite comic's probably "Asterix"

I assumed Bones was something else. Cool. Bone is fairly underrated imo.

I have been reading the Batgirl: Rebirth series. I have decided to try it, especially since she is a member the bat family (Batman fan). I have always seen batgirl on the sidelines in other media but this is my first time reading her solo story. I am not sure what any others would recommend with regards to Batgirl's previous issues/series. Have also started reading Batgirl: Birds of Prey rebirth.

So far the series is off to an adrenaline rushing start but there has not been nothing short of more calm themes such as silly humor and captivating romance. I will anticipate a continually evermore enthralling adventure in this series.

Yeah, I've not read much of hers either before. I thought it was okay, but it didn't really capture me.
I suppose I'm not really the target audience though. How is Birds of Prey?

I started reading the webcomic "Ava's Demon" towards the end of 2014. The unique, beautiful art style alone had me hooked almost instantly, not to mention the excellent storytelling and characters. So much as to even lead me to base this NS account on it's titular character! I'm also reading a handful of other webcomics, such as "Blindsprings", "The Property of Hate", and "Wilde Life."

Among my favorite graphic novels is "Habibi," a fairy tale of sorts set in the contemporary, yet highly traditional Middle Eastern empire of Wanatolia. It explores themes of religion (particularly Islam and Christianity), sexuality and romance, and the natural environment. Personally, I'd say it's a very good read, but other people might be turned away by it's tone, particularly in regards to sexuality and Muslim culture.

Anyone else here read Dungeon meshi? Cause they uploaded the 28th Comic today, so glad they finally got the sister back. I think they'res gonna be some grand plot from what the gnomes are talking about but for some reason I'm worrying whats gonna happen to Senshi when they get to the Surface. He'll probably just hang for a bit then head back down right? Then the'll come back and find him later right? I'm worrying Farlyn would replace him as the fourth party member.
Editing my Signature is glitchy for me. So this is pretty bland.
