I don't really see what's overrated about it. It's just a realistic depiction of the horrors of war that should reasonably resonate with any human being capable of empathy or compassion.

Also movies thrive in a sense of completion or conclusion. I imagine the movie lacked a real sense of conclusion considering what you are implying the content the movie holds.

I understand that, but to call something lazy or tryhard because "it's not your cup of tea" is just wrong.

I can't say whether the movie lost any sense of feeling from the book since I've never read it, only that I've never been so sad reading a book as I was watching that movie and I don't think I can become as emotionally invested in the interactions on a page as I can in dialogue being carried out by real people.

The movie ends on a complete note since it's not a 1:1 adaption of the author's own experience as it's semi-autobiographical.
