I honestly didn't think it would be as good as it is. It looks like it should be some silly kid show or over the top SoL where nothing happens but it's surprisingly fun to watch.

Also watching the plot unfold in Legend of Galactic heroes is kinda interesting. I don't understand why people use axes in space combat though, it boggles the mind.

At first I thought "well the armour the spacemen wear is immune to blaster fire for some reason" but nope, blasters work just fine in space.
Literally no reason for huge axes to be used. idk

for the former: SUGOIIIII
for the latter: it's cause of the gas inside the spaceships thats pumped in when breaching happens that will ignite if lasers are fired, if you mean like why guys like the rosen ritters use it in space iunno other than the fact it's metal as fuck

Huh, the gas from the breaching. I did not know that.

Just finished Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid today. Fantastic series. Heartwarming, fun, cute, and well-written. I even cried a few times in the last episode. It was awesome. I hope it gets a season 2.

While Maid Dragon did have yuri moments, it was not set at high school. Therefore a second season is unlikely. The sudden melancholy ending episode felt like they were closing it up as well.
In order to succeed Kyoto Animation needs to have shows with both yuri and high school. They are very good at this, but they need to maintain the right balance.

I will never forgive Japan for making Nichijou a commercial failure.

I didn't watch Izetta for the yuribait. I watched it because I saw webm of her riding an antitank rifle like a broom and blowing up panzers. I'm not sure why I finished it.

The real answer is that the first season animated almost all the extant Maid Dragon manga and it will be a long time before Cool draws enough for a second season.

The half-real answer is that every show in the winter season got blown out of the water by Kemono Friends

We also have to consider that most anime isn't made to sell itself, but rather to sell the underlying product, i.e. the manga/light novels. It's not a stupid business decision, but rather one that makes complete sense to the industry.

And yeah, we as Western anime consumers are effectively irrelevant to most of the industry's calculations. Their focus is on Japanese consumers, and a show being popular in the West is only icing on the cake.

Why should they care about us though? They make pretty much no money from the west. Streaming services like Crunchy pay them shit and people in the west don't usually buy blu-rays (Their main source of revenue).

The problem is that studios make jack shit from LN and Manga sales. Sure a show might be popular and everyone who sees it might go buy the manga or LN, but if nobody bought the BLu-rays there's little incentive for a studio to make a second season.

Well then maybe they should try investing in the West and diversifying the distribution and how their product makes money, which would most likely turn out well in their favor.

What are you going on about? The dub for Maid Dragon came out near-simultaneously with the Japanese originals, compared to the years it used to take. The Japanese Galapagos syndrome isn't so bad that it occludes their vision about everything. I'm sure they'd love to monetize streaming as well as they do Blu-Rays but that is a problem yet to be solved.

Maid Dragon in particular, though, almost exhausted its source material in thirteen episodes. It sold pretty well but wasn't anything special. Kanna is cute but she will be a forgotten memegirl like Hestia in two years. It'll take a while for Cool to draw enough Maid Dragon (in between his doujins) for a second season, by then Kyoani and its viewers would've moved on to something else.

That still wows me. We have dubs running concurrent with subs these days. It's kind of amazing.

I mean, the studios have made their money. Their budget for the making of the series comes from the Production Committee at the beginning of the whole shebang. All the rights to income from merchandise sales, blu-ray sales, etc. has already been allocated between everyone who's a part of the Production Committee. It's not a question of the studios making money, since--by the time the show has aired--they've already been paid. I'm not sure if the studio gets a cut of the royalties, but that's likely a thing that's going to vary between productions.

As I understand it the studios themselves have relatively little say in what they make second seasons of. It's a question for whether the Production Committee for that franchise comes back and asks for more anime, maybe because they think that more anime will spur more source material or merchandising sales or just generally make them more money. Sure, the studio might--but not always--be a member of the production committee, but I wouldn't say that studios are solely dependent on the DVD sales to make their money.

When I refereed to "studios" I was including the production committee as part of the studio. I know that's not actually the case but in terms of the anime I think it was simpler to refer to them as a single entity. While it is true that the budget for the series is set ahead of time and the people making the show have already been paid, Studios generally like to make more money than what the investors gave them and the investors on the production committee generally want to make back the money they invested. In terms of sales the thing fans buy can be split into three categories, the source material, merchandise and Blu rays. The majority of the production committee do not generally make any royalties from the sales of the source material and they usually get very little from salse of merchandise. The only sales that they get any appreciable money from are the Blu rays. A show may get fantastic ratings and, source materials sales might go through roof but if nobody buys the Blu rays than the actual anime itself wasn't actually successful and the production committee has no incentive to invest in another season.
