Original model:
You can also look up screen caps, the animators had a tendency to make them bigger depending on the angle.

I have heard that when they crossed anime over to the U.S., they targeted it at kids, so they had to cut out a bunch of the more sexual stuff, and, really, they fucked with them in all kinds of ways.
For example, they did it to Sailor Moon: http://www.movie-censorship.com/report.php?ID=2196771

You should see what 4Kids did to One Piece.

4Kids also got rid of a lot of religious references, weirdly enough. Noah was initially supposed to have a deck I believe based on the Seven days of creation. (Because Noah = Noah's Ark?) I mean...this might not matter much if you're nonreligious...but I found this kinda pointless.

You just had to fucking remind me, didn't you?![]()
I remember, exactly, to the detail, when I saw my very first GLIMPSE of One Piece.
I was at my cousin's house, I was 15, it was night time, we were eating popcorn, the couch was blue and sticky, they had a big shitty closet full of PS2 games that didn't work because my other two little cousins are horrible at everything.
She was like "OMG I can't wait to see this new anime, I heard it's about pirates!"
And I was like, "sounds good. I wonder if it's as good as Inuyasha" because I hadn't developed taste back then, and also because Inuyasha and 9/11 go hand in hand.
We finished watching Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo, and One Piece comes on...

At first, we were sort of neutral. I thought, "well that's a lame joke... Even a Puerto Rican wouldn't make that mistake about an English term."
And then the song started. Needless to say, we turned it off and swore off anime for a month... Week.

And don't forget... Ash and his submarine sandwich.
IMO, at least the "donut" doesn't look at all phallic.

But yeah. 4Kids was stupid. Literally had no idea what they were doing.

Doesn't look phallic now... But imagine if instead of cradling it like that, he were sticking it on his pelvis, diagonally, jutting it out.
Imagine if you Photoshopped his arms into the correct position...
Looks at least like he's humping it.
And those Pokkens doing the way they do would not help.

You know, people find Ito's work scary, but I kinda think his stuff is kinda funny.
Funny in a disturbing horror way, but funny nonetheless.

I think what really clinches Junji Ito's effectiveness is that he nails what it means to be surrealistic, what it means to be eldritch, and he doesn't rely on cliches like lots of blood or explicit gore. He lets the imagination screw itself. I remember one where a girl sewed her parents AND her dog to her, a gallery picture I saw once which was just a woman with bugs covering one side of her, and one where a woman's head was the shell of a snail.
Half of the time, you don't know what you're looking at at all. I love how creative he is with monster designs, how close they are to humans sometimes. Japanese monster designs especially are so silly sometimes they made shit like Erma about them, which is goddamn great and hilarious, by the way. https://tapastic.com/episode/255222
... Pretty sure I saw all of his stuff in my nightmares, at one point or another, too.
Is Junji Ito the one who makes all our nightmares? Like, that's his job, nightmare maker?
