It's rather rattling, watching it again, both because the story is so unrelenting while also just not resembling anything else I've seen except maybe Puella Magi Madoka and... Blue Gender I guess? Except, you know, Blue Gender is bad.

You don't often see Millenarianist themes in anime, for fuck's sake. Religion, politics, economics, psychology, scientific theology and ethics, all straining against the potential end of humanity... It's so goddamn Lovecraftian in a way no other anime I've watched has accomplished, and I don't think Anno was even aiming for Lovecraftian horror.

All balanced atop the backs of school children with no parental supervision... The three Children are unabashed pawns in the games of the adults. Nobody is looking out for them except maybe Misato, and she's powerless before the godlike terrors the gaping maw of infinity throws before them, capable of corrupting mind, body, and soul.

And in the end, the canon endings, good and bad, end up with the inevitable end of humanity, raptured into fanta, living in a liquid heaven.

Have they even portrayed a universe in the anime where Third Impact fails? Granted, I've never seen the reboot movies, but I do know those are after Third Impact.

Granted, the original timeline kinda leaves little ambiguity, especially considering that there's nobody stopping either Gendo or SEELE from carrying their versions of Instrumentality.

Unless Misato fucking, I dunno, claps Gendo or Ritsuko or Rei in the back of the head with her 9mm, if SEELE doesn't immediately move in to try to stop Gendo or they're somehow repelled, or unless Gendo decides against Instrumentality in the end, which is more unlikely, since he's cut from the same cloth as SEELE and he's basically the same weird entitled loner asshole Shinji is, just older and eviler.

Asuka does indeed change the whole tone of the show, very abruptly too XD

I think maybe that was the executives trying to rein back the creepy drama back to what they wanted NGE to be, a standard mecha show.

Apparently, Hideaki Anno was literally writing the show episode to episode, so, weirdly enough, as united as the first couple of episodes seem in theme, they didn't have a specific vision or plan at any point during the show's development.

As someone who has had to grapple with existential terror and as an avid fan of Lovecraft, I say NGE captures that very well, especially in End of Evangelion.

Exactly. NGE is breaking in several points. Deconstructing the giant robot anime, the typical shonen series, and that the Lovecraft horror on top of that.

A great deal of the brilliance of the series is the psychological development of the characters. With their virtues and their flaws. They are not your typical characters, they are well fleshed a realistically instead of the usual flat characters.
For example the infamous scene with Asuka and Rei in the elevator. So much for a scene with nearly no animation and no dialogue, and so much happening with the expectations created.

And for the most recently watched anime I have seen is the Steins;Gate --> Steins;Gate 0 saga and I have to say it is amazing! (Or Dr Who for otakus and drama).
