After all, this things existence won't destroy the OVAs, so if I decide I like those--or the novels--better both of those are still waiting for me. I'm gonna try and look at this thing on its own merits, rather than by comparison to its predecessors.
It's doing things a bit differently than the OVAs so that's a thing. It's nice seeing all the ships feel/appear cooler than ye olde colored blocks with lines coming out of 'em. Animation overall seems perfectly fine, though I am also catching up on Violet Evergarden, so that'll skew my perceptions. It's too early to tell if the show'll capture the feelings and drama that make LotGH such a big name, but I'm willing to give it a chance to show me that it's a worthy update to the original.
Here's hoping it succeeds.

I'm sorry, but the problem isn't that it told a story you didn't want to hear. The problem is you think it should've told the story you wanted to hear.
Little bit of column A, little bit of column B.

Honestly I quite enjoyed it as well.
It's the sensation of seeing a old friend again, that's what I got out of it.

I disliked it. Production wise I thought it was okay, but the new designs are garbage and the music sucks. I get the whole "look at it as a separate thing from the old OVAs" mentality some people have but having also read the books, I'm just not feeling it no matter whether I look at it as a remake nor if I look at it as an adaptation. Maybe it'll convince me in a few episodes. I want this to be the next Yamato 2199 but so far that seems unlikely.

it just didn't go the whole way because it would scare off it's Loli/Fanservice demographic.

That manga was so bloody edgy, as much as I enjoyed Shizuka's design and samurai paraphernalia. It could be pretty annoying to read. Then it drifted into pony play and I quit reading a few chapters after that.

Human shields, arson, illegal tank battles, and edgy faces, oh my!
I still read it anyway.

I will admit it's fan service, but acting like it's supposed to have any sort of edge to it is dishonest.

I don't recall panty shots. Bath scenes and swimsuits yeah, but not panty shots. In fact I remember a comic that highlighted the lack of panty shots despite the sheer number of chances.
