First episode of the new Legend of the Galactic Heroes was...not a complete disaster? I'm trying to keep 'It's not the same as the old OVAs but with better graphics' feelings away, so I'm giving things like character designs, and the new music a chance (though I do miss the classical). After all, this things existence won't destroy the OVAs, so if I decide I like those--or the novels--better both of those are still waiting for me. I'm gonna try and look at this thing on its own merits, rather than by comparison to its predecessors.
It's doing things a bit differently than the OVAs so that's a thing. It's nice seeing all the ships feel/appear cooler than ye olde colored blocks with lines coming out of 'em. Animation overall seems perfectly fine, though I am also catching up on Violet Evergarden, so that'll skew my perceptions. It's too early to tell if the show'll capture the feelings and drama that make LotGH such a big name, but I'm willing to give it a chance to show me that it's a worthy update to the original.
Here's hoping it succeeds.
