But yeah, the Kancolle anime is trash. If you want to just watch clips of it on youtube, since they'll give you access to all the memes without having to sit through the whole thing. Hopefully the film is actually good.

Well, I finished series one of Log Horizon. I really enjoyed it.

While the central conceit of being trapped in a video game is well worn at this point, Log Horizon is still an interesting show for several reasons. I think the heart of it is the relationship between the main characters and the world around them. Heroes in a great deal of fiction tend to be outsiders living outside the system, or struggling against it, because this gives a natural arc for their story to follow. Log Horizon is different in that a significant proportion of it's main characters are the system, because at it's core this is a series about governance. The goal of the protagonists is not to defeat the a big bad enemy without or within, but to construct a functioning society. Of course, there are enemies to be defeated, but they are often only ciphers for some aspect of statesmanship; law enforcement, administration, economics, and so on. Due to the nature of the setting (Inside an MMO), a lot of the characters are more or less invincible on the field of battle. Thus, the most important action takes place on the diplomatic stage. This makes it all sound rather heavy going, but rest assured that it's not. There's a real joie de vivre to the whole experience, mostly expressed in the form of really silly jokes and the show making fun of itself. It's fundamentally optimistic about humans and what we can achieve if we work together, which is not a common attitude in this kind of fiction. All the characters are also immensely likeable and made me want to spend time with them.

Overall, I'd rate this series an 8/10.

Honestly I wasn't that shocked by it since the other notable anime based on a work by the same creator, "I can't understand what my husband is saying", ends each episode with the explicit statement that the two main characters went on to have lots and lots of sex. The yuri levels here are nowhere near as shocking as it was seeing that as the ending of an episode when I watched it for the first time.
