Ah, but seriously, Jim Sterling has made a second response to Extra Credit about the cost of video games and microtransactions.

I wanted to ask, what do YOU guys think?

Yeah... Extra Credit is full of shit, IMO. I usually enjoy their videos but they're being inadvertent shills.

Extra credits are good people, but I very much disagree with them on the loot box.

I seriously don't get their arguments, but it's because they're not based in reality.

There's plenty of games made on a low budget that have succeeded, far more than even the Assassin's Creed games, which have been losing sales as time goes on.

Plus, Origins is terrible.

His argument is nigh on incoherent thanks to all the swearing and diversionary ranting. The first half is pretty much him conceding that all these costs exist but that doesn't matter...somehow? For instance, he was dismissive about the cost of computers and software and janitors, but he had no counterpoint there.

He's got some probably reasonable points about executive pay and shareholder profits, but his assertions about successful games from small devs are mind-bogglingly moronic and brazenly ignore what EC did not in favour of some faux-outrage about the phrase "lightning in a bottle".

It doesn't help that he's not clear what the point of the video is. Is he complaining about lootboxes or discussing the costs of games? He keeps transitioning from points about one to conclusions about the other, and vice versa. What's his conclusion? That games should cost less (his points about unethical treatment of employees seems to suggest the opposite)? That executives should be paid less? That shareholders should accept a reduction in profits? That studios should stop making high-fidelity games (his entire discussion of graphics is derailed by ranting on about some irrelevant bullshit about games having been marketed in part on the basis of excellent graphics)? He rants for a long time, picks out random examples and marketing statements, but doesn't come to a point.

tl;dr, he's probably right about some things but he's also an incoherent dick.

It's not part of "Make America Great Again" since Acer is Taiwan-based.

I’ve actually been interested in playing that sometime but I feel like it might’ve aged like milk these days. I do like how the GTA games reference it, though, I think that’s a neat tie-in.

The fact that Manhunt and Manhunt 2 are AO rated killed any chances of them being released digitally through Steam. Steam won't sell AO-rated games.

They need remastered versions but I don't think Rockstar wants to do that. I never play those games which is why I want to play.

Yeah, it’s a shame. It’s pretty ridiculous when you think of all of the porn games on steam that are perfectly fine for the general consumer to be able to see, but a bit too much violence? That’s crossing the line!

Yeah, Steam really needs to get some reality check. They allow visual novel games or interactive games which rely on nudity and porn but not with violences?

I think his lightning in a bottle gripe is justified. Also, why would swearing make his response incoherent?

Extra Credit are the ones that went with that wording. I don't know how they think video games are made, but you don't just mash your hands against a keyboard and bam, a game is made. Indie games are compartmentalized productions that simply have a different emphasis than "AAA" game productions. The majority of many AAA game budges goes to graphical fidelity, which... Yeah, who the fuck cares. Werewolf Fanficiton: 1886 was one of the most technically advanced video games in history and it was also a piece of shit I don't remember the exact name of. Meanwhile, Minecraft is one of the single most best selling video games of all time and it uses voxel graphics, which a ten year old once used to make Roblox.

I think what Jim gets at, what he gets at in all of his videos about the subject (maybe you should go watch them, I think the reason he comes across as incoherent is because he's argued this point many times before) is that the "AAA" industry has lost sight of what makes games worth buying. Indeed, many franchises have been killed due to microtransactions already, but nobody seems to put two and two together that they don't make games any better, it just makes them better revenue streams and gets more money out of gullible customers.

I actually somewhat disagree with him on one point: I don't mind microtransactions at all. The more money the industry has, the better games can be. HOWEVER, despite having larger budgets and bigger teams and more passion, I've noticed that I seem to buy video games less and less as time goes on. I was puzzled as to why until I realized that the same games that I used to like (Assassin's Creed, Dead Space, Mass Effect, anything from the Ghost Recon series, and Deus Ex, to name a few) are now all fountains of microtransactions and they've decreased in quality and, in my opinion, enjoyment as time goes on.

Sterling's major point is that the current AAA market is unsustainable, and I'm inclined to agree with him with all of the borderline begging the companies are doing. "Oh no our game sold 10 million copies when it should have sold 50 million. Please help us guys buy our microtransactions so we can make the sequel lol"

It's DarkSydePhil-esque at this point.

Yeah ive fought them before, they are frustrating at times but manageable early on.

Having to deal with High Elven full stacks coming across every 15 turns after near 60 turns of war that they wont end is also.. frustrating to put it mildly. Their soldiers are better than mine, and even with a ton of cavalry i take heavy losses beating their armies, and they invaded each time with 2-3 full stacks of soldiers. Yay!

Its that bad, Dark Elves are offering proposals for military alliances, and im having non aggression pacts with skaven. Like what the fuck is going on.

I can't name a battlefield weakness the High Elves have. It might be good to take out Tyrion's faction.
