who needs tactical sophistication and planning when you have a battalion's worth of T-72s to throw against two companies of ukrainians

my opponent's reaction:

I'll give you one thing, I sure as fuck wasn't expecting that
I'll never question your elan again

I've just been seeing a bunch of partial spots floating around the back of the map for 3 or 4 turns
Then honest to god like 20 T-72s just fly over the ridge at me

I wish people would make more Alt-history games based around a similar time period to ww1/ww2, it would have some familiarity but also add in some new stuff that could be refreshing, say instead of being a US soldier fighting against the Germans in 1944, you are an Italian City State soldier fighting against an invading Authoritative French Empire in 1923, and for good measure throw in some more fantastical elements like more advanced giant airships kitted out with a ton of weapons or have a mix of older and more futuristic war equipment.

Im mainly wanting that though because thats the stuff i have stuck in my head and plan on working on some art relating to that when i finish up Uni.

I'm not a fan of COD, but I generally prefer science-fiction settings for first-person shooter games.

It's for the sole reason that the narrative justification for unrealistic technology allows for the introduction of innovative gameplay elements and styles, like in the case of Starsiege: Tribes, Half-Life 2, and Prey.

Call of Duty 4 has a good story. After that, it was a general downward slope in quality.

Black Ops II did a neat thing with its story.

Plus COD4 is really the start of that since the older WWII games weren't very story focused.

If its 1923 then the airship would get ripped by all-metal monoplane fighters with automatic cannons, automatic cannon anti-aircraft guns, and large caliber flak guns.

Unless we're going down the autismo path that Bioshock:Infinate did with their attack of 1980s New York. Which would be gay as fuck.

A much better alt-history:

1919: In one of the many street fights in Berlin during this time, a nameless Corporal is killed during an exchange of gunfire, his name, Adolf Hitler, is lost to time and history.

1921: After the Polish–Soviet War, Soviet troops captured Warsaw and crush the stillborn Polish state before it could even emerge into the world. Tens of thousands of Poles flee to Germany. As the curtain closes on Eastern Europe, the Baltic States, having also recently fought for their own independence, fall to the Soviet invasion. Rapid reaction of the German Reichswehr into defensive positions along the Polish-German border are reason enough for the Soviets to halt any attempted furthering of their war.

1924: The Left Opposition succeed in taking taking over after Vladimir Lenin's death. Stalin, along with a few of this ardent supporters, seem to vanish or succumb to various 'accidents'. Trotsky, being a heavy supporter of exporting the Revolution rather than Stalin's more Pan-Slavic approach to Communism is found to be much more disturbing to Western European leaders.

1926: With the heavy anti-Communist stance of the Weimar Republic, the Republic begins secretive talks and cooperation with Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia and Romania. With their already existing alliance, ironically called the Little Entente which was created to check Austrian and Hungarian reunification, now realizes that the ever swelling Soviet military state is far more of a threat. The Germans broker deals with the nations along with Hungary and Austria and joint-cooperation begins clandestinely.

July 1931: In Paris after weeks of riots following economic collapse, Soviet backed protesters begin fighting the feeble French Republic once again. The Second Paris Commune, with full blessing of Trotsky and the Soviet Union, establishes itself and is able to gain ground. It holds all of Northern France, however it is unable to dislodge the rest of the French government, which has once again moved to Bordeaux like that had in 1914. On almost the same lines as how our Vichy France and German occuipied France laid upon, the Commune of France and the new Fourth Republic are at each other's throats. With support of Commune French naval ships, Soviet troops arrive on the shores of France in the North to support their new allies.

1932: Germany openly announces its formal alliance with Czechoslovakia, Romania, Austria, Hungary and Yugoslavia known as the Mittlere Front in German. The Germans begin open military rearmament, much slower than our world's Nazis, but its begun.

1936: The Mittlere Front has seen a rapid military expansion across all nations involved. While it has been great so far, the alliance is more than pressed from all sides. Notably, with the Turks decision to appease the Soviets and deny Germany naval access to Romania, the Germans have built huge naval gun positions with the Romanians adding additional fortifications along their coast with the Black Sea to deter the newly formed Soviet Naval Marines from landing. They also deal with their land border with the Soviets as well. The German are pushed in on both sides and have established a small border defense force, with an ever increasing number of motorized and panzer divisions to move to an attack, halt it and push it back.

1940: After a series of small scale skirmishes in Eastern Prussia, a full scale invasion it launched by the Soviets and Eastern Prussia collapses within days. The Mittlere Front unanimously declares war on the French Commune and the Soviet Union

You would play a multi-series CoD II style campaign as you move from role to role. You get to play as a Czechoslovakian tank commander of an ST vz. 39, apart of the 2. Mobile Division as you coordinate with the 3. Panzer-Division in a counter-offensive in southeastern Germany/Eastern tips of the Sudetenland, a Romanian soldier assigned to repealing the Soviet naval invasion at his blockhouse fort on the Black Sea, and even as an Austrian Gerbsjager, fighting Commune French Chasseurs and Soviet Gronostrekli in the Alps.

Or we could just have a WW2 game that takes place on all the fronts that end badly for the Allies.

Like, a Polish campaign would be nice. Like it starts at the Post Office in Danzig and would end with another dude as he walks into Katyn Forest at gunpoint by the NKVD. It would be cool but the Tankies and Commies would get shitty about the Soviets getting shown as the bad guys.

Also Finnish front, Italy, etc.
